Accommodation in Bad Königshofen im Grabfeld
Bad Königshofen im Grabfeld offers several distinct highlights to consider when planning your trip: the FrankenTherme, museums covering archaeological and contemporary history, as well as paths and viewpoints. When looking for a hotel, you can consider whether wellness, local history or outdoor activities are a better fit for your stay. Local attractions provide some specific starting points.
Thermal Baths and Sauna Village
The pools at the FrankenTherme Bad Königshofen are fed by the two state-recognized mineral springs, Regiusquelle and Urbaniquelle. The natural healing-water lake in Bad Königshofen combines genuine healing water with biological filtration. The FrankenTherme’s Finnish-Franconian Sauna Village comprises seven themed saunas with temperatures ranging from 55°C to 95°C.
Culture at the Schranne
The Schranne and the Museum for Border Crossers represent two historical perspectives: archaeology and prehistory on the one hand, and life at and with the border in the Grabfeld on the other. The Archaeological Museum in Bad Königshofen opened in 1988 as a branch of the Munich State Archaeological Collection in the Schranne, a grain store built in 1693. After extensive renovations to the building and exhibition, it reopened on May 14, 2019. The Schranne is also home to the Museum Education Center’s Stone Age Workshop in Bad Königshofen. It is aimed especially at school classes and groups, offering insights into the lives and craft techniques of prehistoric people.
The Museum for Border Crossers is located in the former salt house, part of the Schranne building. Spread over two floors, it explores life at and with the border in the Grabfeld. It covers the period before 1945, characterized by close neighborly ties and a shared dialect and economic region, as well as the period from 1945 to 1989, when crossing the border was often life-threatening. The remains of the fortification walls and city gates in Bad Königshofen are also worth visiting.
Trails and Views
The accessible Grabfeldblick viewing platform offers views of the Grabfeld, the Thuringian countryside and the Haßberge hills. The Baumlehr-Allee is a four-kilometer circular route through Bad Königshofen featuring 110 tree species. It includes the Mediterranean Garden (Monastery Garden), the Celtic Grove (Brügel) and the Sorbus Rose Garden on the Franconian Saale.
The “Culture at Every Step” cultural hiking trail passes through Bad Königshofen, Merkershausen and Annabild before returning to its starting point; it is about 12 kilometers long. A cycling route follows the former railway line from Bad Königshofen via Bad Neustadt to Bischofsheim and is about 54 kilometers long. In terms of distance, the Baumlehr-Allee is shorter than the cultural hiking trail; the cycling route offers a much longer option. Before setting out on the cultural hiking trail or the former railway line, check current trail conditions locally.
