There are various reasons to travel around Fürth: Hohenzollern history, historic monasteries and museums, themed trails and natural areas. The destinations are spread across several places. If you’re looking for a hotel, it’s therefore helpful to first decide what you’d like to focus on during your stay.

Castles, Monasteries and History

The Hohenzollerns are documented as owners of the castle in Cadolzburg from the mid-13th century. Surviving parts of the building date from around 1250; the castle is also home to the interactive castle experience museum “HerrschaftsZeiten! Erlebnis Cadolzburg.” On the first Sunday of each month at 11 a.m., it hosts the 75-minute family overview tour “HerrschaftsZeiten! So lebten die Hohenzollern auf der Cadolzburg.” Check the date before your trip.

Langenzenn also offers a glimpse of historic architecture: the former Augustinian Canons’ monastery complex dates from 1409. North of the town church, the Trinity Church, it forms a three-wing complex; the cloister is particularly well preserved. You can also use augmented reality features from the Erlebnis-Hohenzollern app in the monastery courtyard.

In Roßtal, the Archaeological Trail passes the excavation sites of the former castle. Large information boards explain the history of “urbs horsadal,” the name for Roßtal when it was first mentioned in a document in 954. The restored museum courtyard complements the historic focus with archaeological and local history collections.

The corporate and family history of Faber-Castell is also a visitor attraction in the surrounding area: the Graf von Faber-Castell’sche Schloss brings its 265-year history to life. Advance booking online is required.

Walking Trails and Themed Routes

The Hohenzollern Cultural Hiking Trail is a day hike from Roßtal to Langenzenn along field and forest paths. Cultural and historic stops are located in Roßtal, Cadolzburg and Langenzenn; the trail has been awarded the “Wanderbares Deutschland” quality seal. The Allianz Trail offers a different route: this circular trail, around 50 kilometers long, is designed for hikers and cyclists and passes through Ammerndorf, Cadolzburg, Großhabersdorf, Oberasbach, Roßtal, Stein and Zirndorf in the southern district of Fürth.

In Ammerndorf, the Art and Nature Trail connects artistic and natural spaces along four themed routes. A 2.5-kilometer stretch runs alongside the Bibert Valley cycle path and features numerous artworks and sculptures; information boards explain ecological topics. The educational trail starts at the threshing-machine house. You can choose between a trail with art and nature themes in one place and a longer circular route through several municipalities.

Another starting point for a hike is in Stein-Unterweihersbuch, where the Wallenstein’s Camp Experience Trail begins. The starting point is easily reached from Nuremberg by bus and subway.

Nature and Attractions in the Surrounding Area

The Hainberg Nature Reserve lies mostly in the district of Fürth, with a smaller part extending into Nuremberg. Covering 213 hectares, the reserve borders the Rednitz River and has been in existence since 1995. It is home to northern Bavaria’s largest area of nutrient-poor sandy grassland and provides a habitat and refuge for many endangered plants and animals.

Another landmark worth visiting for the views is the rebuilt tower of the Alte Veste in Zirndorf. Rebuilt in 1980, the tower has an observation platform with views over Zirndorf, Nuremberg, Fürth and the surrounding area. In Zirndorf, the PLAYMOBIL FunPark also offers 90,000 square meters of opportunities for climbing, balancing and playing. In bad weather, the glass-enclosed HOB Center, covering 5,000 square meters, features life-size PLAYMOBIL scenes, play areas, a show stage, themed dining and a coffee bar.
