Roßtal brings together archaeological traces, church art and places like Spitzweed. The Archaeological Trail runs past several stops at the Upper Market in the town center. This gives your stay a clear focus on local history; other highlights include the monastery garden on the grounds of the Museumshof and St. Laurentius Parish Church.

Archaeology and Local History

The Roßtal Archaeological Trail includes the former court office of the Margraves in Roßtal and passes the excavation sites of the former castle. Large information boards explain the history of “urbs horsadal,” the name used for Roßtal when it was first mentioned in a document in 954. Each information board along the trail has two sections; the lower section contains child-friendly text and illustrations. The guided tours in the Roßtal market town focus on something different: they share stories about buildings and squares in the old market town. Check availability with the local operator.

The monastery garden on the grounds of the Museumshof in Roßtal is laid out in the style of the early Middle Ages. Alongside the archaeological stops, it offers a distinct focus of its own: here, the garden itself takes center stage, while the trail brings together several stops.

Church Art and Other Impressions

At St. Laurentius Parish Church, a detail on the tower and a sequence of coats of arms on the gallery can be seen side by side. The 52-meter-high tower has a frieze decorated with heads on its south side, above the top of the Gothic window; one female head is thought to depict Elisabeth, Burgravine of Nuremberg. On the lower section of the gallery, closest to the choir, are the Hohenzollern and Brandenburg coats of arms, the Wittelsbach coat of arms added by Burgravine Elisabeth, and the coat of arms of the Burgrave of Nuremberg.

Benches at Spitzweed invite you to sit and watch the fish in the pond. In early summer, you can also hear a “Forschkonzert” there.
