Discover Ammerndorf
Accommodation in Ammerndorf
Ammerndorf combines cycling and walking routes with a village setting shaped by half-timbered houses, the village church and historic buildings. You can choose different focuses for your stay: the Art and Nature Trail leads from the Bibert Valley Cycle Path into the countryside, while the Cultural Trail connects selected local landmarks. The threshing machine house, mill and private brewery add to the picture of the village’s history.
Cycling and walking routes
The threshing machine house is halfway through Ammerndorf, directly beside the cycle path. Three more themed trails branch off from there; it is also the starting and finishing point for the Ammerndorf Art and Nature Trail routes. This trail leads hikers and cyclists from the Bibert Valley Cycle Path into the countryside. The village thus brings together different cycling and walking routes at a clearly marked point of orientation.
Along the cycling route of the Art and Nature Trail, numerous works of art and sculptures are displayed over a distance of about 2.5 kilometres. A 2.5-kilometre walk follows the Reichenbach; along the stream you can discover a still body of water, a bird sanctuary and a flower meadow. The route is suitable for hikers, cyclists, families and school groups. Well-signposted paths, parking facilities and a connection to public transport round out the offering. Check current services and parking options before travelling.
At one kilometre, the Cultural Trail is a short route through the village: it passes the rectory, St Peter and Paul’s Church and the market square, continuing to the former railway station. This shorter route with local landmarks offers a different focus from the Art and Nature Trail’s sections of about 2.5 kilometres: there, the emphasis is on cycling past the artworks or walking beside the stream. This lets you compare route length and how you want to get around when choosing a route.
Village setting and architectural history
Old half-timbered houses stand around the market square. St Peter and Paul’s Church, with its onion dome visible from afar, is considered Ammerndorf’s landmark. It was remodelled in several stages during the 18th century. The tower was rebuilt in 1730, and its cupola was given a Baroque style in 1761.
The threshing machine house has also changed over time: it once housed the cooperative threshing machine; today it is the clubhouse of the Ammerndorf Heritage and Gardening Association. Its former agricultural function and present-day use by the association thus represent different chapters in the village’s history.
Mill, brewery and festivals
The historic Ammerndorf Mill dates back to 1607. Various types of organic flour are available there. If you plan to buy some, check in advance which varieties are currently available.
A private brewery has been based in Ammerndorf since 1730; for a long time, it was the only brewery of its kind in the district. Group tours at Dorn-Bräu can be arranged in advance. Opposite the brewery, its inn invites you to stop for a meal or a drink in its shady beer garden; check whether the inn is currently open before visiting. Ammerndorf’s celebrations include an elderflower festival in spring and a wine festival in autumn. If either falls within your travel dates, check the specific event dates.
