Discover Fürth: Culture, History and Green Spaces
Accommodation in Fürth
If you’re looking for a hotel for a stay in Fürth, you can plan your time around your interests: local history and museums, architecture or green spaces. The city offers a range of places and themes for each of these interests.
Local History and Architecture in Fürth
The Fürth City Museum documents the history of the Cloverleaf City. Its local history exhibition covers around 800 square metres and traces the city’s development from a small market town to a modern metropolis. The exhibition also explores social and economic history.
A striking landmark is Fürth Town Hall: its square tower is 52 metres high and modelled on the Palazzo Vecchio in Florence. The origins of St. Michael’s Church date back to around 1100; it is the oldest surviving building in Fürth. The Church of the Resurrection is also among the city’s oldest surviving churches.
Hornschuchpromenade and Königswarterstraße form a heritage-protected ensemble regarded as a prime example of Fürth’s Belle Époque and described as unrivalled in southern Germany. The historic Ludwig Railway once ran along their central green strip. Both streets are right next to Jakobinenstraße underground station. If you plan to travel by underground, check the current timetable before setting off.
Museums and Jewish History
At its main site in Fürth, the Jewish Museum Franconia presents the history of Fürth’s Jewish community and the region, from the Middle Ages to modern times. Among its special features is the historic home of a prominent Jewish family from the 17th century. It contains a mikveh and a sukkah.
Visitors can enjoy Jewish pastries at the Mary S. Rosenberg Café in the museum garden. These include Fürth lemon cake, prepared according to the original recipe of a Jewish family. The City Museum complements its exhibitions with special exhibitions, guided tours, events and museum education programmes. As individual programme items may change, it is advisable to check specific dates in advance.
Fürth’s Green Spaces and Walking Routes
Fürth City Park was created on the site of a former cemetery next to the Church of the Resurrection and took on its present form in 1951 for a garden show. It is considered the city’s green heart and is a place to relax, stroll and jog. The spiritual walk “Geh aus mein Herz” also leads through the park. The free “actionbound” smartphone app, which does not require registration, lets you experience the walk as a digital scavenger hunt with seven stops. App availability may change, so it is worth checking before planning your walk.
The riverside promenade along the Rednitz runs along the western edge of Fürth city centre. This peaceful, natural stretch is ideal for a stroll and a breath of fresh air. For a different view of Fürth, head to the Solarberg: the former rubble hill is now used to generate electricity and serves as a local recreation area with panoramic views of Fürth and the surrounding area. It is right by the Main-Danube Canal and well connected to Fürth’s cycle network.
