Cadolzburg combines a striking castle complex with a historic townscape. The castle stands on a rocky outcrop above the town and shaped its development; Cadolzburg and the castle were the residence of the Burgraves of Nuremberg and the Hohenzollern Margraves of Brandenburg.

The Castle and the Town’s History

At the foot of the castle stands the Evangelical Margrave’s Church. The sandstone building was erected in 1751 on the foundations of a Gothic church dating from the 13th century. The building history therefore places a structure from 1751 directly after a Gothic predecessor from the 13th century. The castle complex and church provide distinct points of reference in the historic townscape.

Many historic buildings shape Cadolzburg, especially around the market square and in the narrow lanes surrounding the castle complex. Representative half-timbered gables still mostly face the market square. The square thus brings together two aspects of town life: it shapes the historic setting and also serves today as the backdrop for the church fair and traditional Advent market. The dates of these events vary; if one of them is the reason for your trip, plan around the current event dates.

The former local history house of the Cadolzburg market town reopened in a new form as the “Cadolzburg Historical Museum” on April 6, 2017.

Exhibitions and Tours at Cadolzburg Castle

On four floors of the Old Castle and throughout the inner castle, visitors can discover various aspects of life in a lordly castle. The exhibition combines original objects with elaborate reproductions, staged displays and media stations. It also features games, media applications and tactile stations that actively engage visitors, as well as an extensive educational program. Active participation is therefore part of the exhibition experience, alongside the objects and displays.
