The Danube flows past Leipheim, Günzburg, and Offingen on its way to the Black Sea, and is part of the region’s riverside and floodplain landscape. The Mindel also shapes Günzburg district: it flows through the district and joins the Danube at Gundremmingen. This gives you a range of themes to consider when planning your trip: trails through forests and rolling hills, pilgrimage sites, museums, and leisure activities. Deciding which of these will shape your stay is a helpful starting point when choosing where to stay.

Hiking trails in and around Günzburg

The DonAuwald hiking trail is the first premium hiking trail in Bavarian Swabia and runs for around 60 kilometers between Günzburg and Schwenningen. The DonauHänge is an 18.5-kilometer circular trail between Günzburg and Offingen that passes through hillside forest. If you prefer a circular route, you can follow the route format of the DonauHänge; the DonAuwald hiking trail offers a longer route between two towns. The length and route provide concrete points of reference to help you choose.

The certified Streifzüge walking trails pass along streams and ponds and through gently rolling landscapes. In Thannhausen, the Hansenhohl nature trail adds to the options: along its roughly 1.5 kilometers are eight play and information stations. There is also the free quiz tour “Sabotage im Hansenhohl” (Sabotage in Hansenhohl) as a mystery app; check in advance whether the app is available. Because of the risk of slipping, visits to the trail are not recommended in winter.

Those interested in regional history can visit the Celtic Trail in Ichenhausen. At six listening points, the lives of the Celts and druids are presented in audio format. The distance from the first to the last listening point is 3 kilometers. Listening point 6 is currently inaccessible; check the current route before your visit. For cycling routes, the GünzBike cycling map provides an overview of the river valley cycle routes in the district, as well as the Danube Cycle Path, the DonauTäler cycle route, and the LEGOLAND® family route. Check current trail conditions before setting out.

Pilgrimage and religious sites

Maria Vesperbild is located near Ziemetshausen in Günzburg district and is considered the largest pilgrimage site in Bavarian Swabia. Each year, 400,000 to 500,000 pilgrims visit the miraculous image of Our Lady of Sorrows; visitor numbers may change over time. A Way of the Cross leads from the pilgrimage church to the Fatima Grotto in the nearby forest. It was built in 1957 and restored in 2011. More than 1,000 votive plaques bearing words of thanks and testimony to help received from the Virgin Mary stand at the grotto.

Museums and architecture

The Museum of the City of Burgau spans more than 700 square meters and presents the town’s history from the Middle Ages to the recent past across two floors. The Bavarian School Museum in Ichenhausen traces the development of education over thousands of years. A historic classroom illustrates teaching conditions in the past: it once accommodated around 50 children. The Wettenhausen Monastery Museum, which opened in 2021, offers insights into a tradition dating back almost a thousand years. Check current opening hours before visiting a museum.

The Imperial Hall in Wettenhausen is known for its monumental stucco ceiling. Concerts, conferences, and ceremonies are held there; it’s worth checking the current program when planning a visit. This makes it easy to choose among the cultural sites according to your interests: town history in Burgau, school history in Ichenhausen, or architecture and monastic tradition in Wettenhausen.

Leisure activities and getting there

LEGOLAND® Deutschland in Günzburg features 11 themed areas and 68 attractions. MINILAND is the heart of the theme park. The park and its adjoining holiday village offer experiences for children aged 2 to 12. If these attractions are the focus of your trip, you can plan your day around them. Check the latest operating details before your visit.

If you’re traveling by car, the Leipheim, Günzburg, and Burgau exits on the A8 Stuttgart–Munich motorway lead directly into Günzburg district. Günzburg is also on Deutsche Bahn’s Stuttgart–Munich long-distance rail route. It’s best to check current timetables and traffic conditions before setting off. When choosing a hotel, it’s a good idea to first decide which experiences matter to you, then factor their locations into your travel plans.
