Offingen: Danube floodplain forest, walking trails and chapels
Accommodation in Offingen
Offingen offers several specific points of interest to consider when planning a trip: the ash-rich floodplain forest along the Danube, walking trails on slopes and by waterways, the facilities at Mindelstrand and St. Ursula Chapel in Schnuttenbach. This lets you decide whether your stay should focus more on walks, a break by the water or architectural and art history.
Floodplain forest and walking trails near Offingen
Offingen borders a floodplain forest rich in ash trees directly along the Danube, where you can go for walks. Plants growing there include wild garlic, mountain thistles, wood anemones and spring snowflakes. Numerous walking trails near Offingen pass springs, oxbow lakes and dry grasslands; along the way, you can experience steep slopes and slope shoulders up to 60 metres high. For choosing where to go, this means the trees and the plants mentioned are the focus in the floodplain forest, while the trails near Offingen also take in other landscape features such as slopes and waterside areas.
Places by the water and cycling stops
At Mindelstrand Offingen, the Mindel takes centre stage as the lifeline of the town; the area is described as a place to relax, unwind and swim. Facilities include a sunbathing lawn, a barefoot path with a Kneipp pool, outdoor chess and outdoor fitness equipment. Before your visit, it is advisable to check the facilities; when swimming, pay attention to the current conditions.
Near the Offingen senior living complex, there is a small sensory park with a Kneipp facility, a barefoot path and a humming stone. In addition to residents of the senior living complex, it also invites the local community and cycling tourists to linger. The park therefore offers its own distinctive experience: the humming stone and the location near the senior living complex are part of the visit.
For cyclists, the Offingen cyclists’ rest stop and the confluence of the Mindel and Danube are also points of reference. The cyclists’ rest stop at Danube river kilometre 2554.3 is a place to take a break; there is a boat landing on the left bank. The Mindel confluence near Offingen is another starting point for a cycling tour. This makes it possible to distinguish between a rest stop on the Danube, the boat landing and a tour starting point on the Mindel.
St. Ursula Chapel and church in Schnuttenbach
St. Ursula Chapel in Schnuttenbach dates from the 12th or 13th century and is Early Gothic. It is considered the oldest surviving church building in the former district of Günzburg. The chapel contains 12th-century frescoes, offering a glimpse into the building’s early decoration.
The Church of St. Ursula, added to the chapel in 1977, has artistically valuable stained-glass windows by Prof. Oberberger of Munich. The chapel and church extension thus show different periods: the medieval chapel with its frescoes and the later church with its stained-glass windows.
