Ziemetshausen can be explored through a range of themes: Maria Vesperbild is associated with pilgrimage and pilgrimage routes, while the museums focus on domestic life, weaving and woodworking. Other highlights include the parish church, consecrated in 1705, and the Christkindlesmarkt, held annually on the second weekend of Advent. You can shape your stay around religious sites, collections or a specific event date.

Pilgrimage and Religious Sites

Maria Vesperbild is a district of Ziemetshausen. From the pilgrimage church, a Way of the Cross leads through a light beech forest to the Fatima Grotto north of Seyfriedsberg Castle. The church, woodland path and grotto form a specific route and a distinct pilgrimage experience.

The western route of the Bavarian-Swabian Way of St. James also passes the Catholic pilgrimage church of Maria Vesperbild in Ziemetshausen. This brings two different routes together at the same pilgrimage site: the Way of the Cross to the Fatima Grotto and the western route of a named pilgrimage trail. If you are interested in a stay with a religious focus, you can consider these routes as two different options.

The parish church in Ziemetshausen was consecrated in 1705 and is now a notable attraction. Nearby, in Seyfriedsberg Castle Park, trees from every continent stand more than a century old. The particularly mild microclimate on Seyfriedsberg allows warmth-loving, frost-sensitive species such as the ginkgo tree to grow. Alongside the religious buildings, the park offers a nature-focused perspective shaped by the trees’ age, origins and special growing conditions.

The Ziemetshausen Christkindlesmarkt is held annually on the second weekend of Advent and attracts visitors from near and far. It therefore takes place within a clearly defined period and runs over a weekend. If you plan to travel specifically for the market, check the exact event dates for the year in question.

Museums and Crafts

The Stegmannhaus offers a glimpse into domestic life around 1900. Exhibits include an original, preserved textile and haberdashery shop, an old kitchen, a living room, a bedroom and a cobbler’s workshop. The collection brings together views of domestic spaces and a place of work, covering more than just a single room or subject.

The Gebr. Stegmann Weaving Museum complements this with a focus on textile processing and weaving. It shows how flaxseed is processed into flax fibre, as well as stages of weaving, mechanical looms and handlooms used to make rag rugs. Fabrics, pattern books and parts of a shop interior complement the equipment. The collection thus brings together material processing, weaving techniques, patterns and shop fittings. As you explore, you can take in different aspects of textile production and presentation.

The “Bei d‘ Hölzerne” Crafts Museum demonstrates planing, woodturning and sawing. It also features an extensive collection of woodworking tools, as well as machinery and tools from a former commercial joinery. The joinery was established in 1900 and closed 100 years later. The combination of craft demonstrations and workshop equipment sets it apart from the textile collection at the weaving museum.

The Ziemetshausen Joinery Museum houses a complete joinery workshop from around 1900 on permanent loan. This adds another perspective on woodworking: rather than individual work processes or a collection of tools, the focus here is on a complete workshop as a collection in its own right. The date “around 1900” places it in its historical context without assigning it to a specific year.

Architecture in Focus

The Taferne can also be described by its dimensions. The two-storey building is 20 metres long, 17 metres wide and 20 metres high to the ridge. The comparison between its length and ridge height is especially striking: both are given as 20 metres, while its width is 17 metres.
