Discover Thannhausen
Accommodation in Thannhausen
Thannhausen offers a range of things to explore during a stay: architectural and art history, an art trail through the town, and wakeboarding and water skiing at Turncable Wakepark. Each location has something different to offer, whether your main interest is historic furnishings, art in public spaces or water sports.
Church art and architectural history
The Catholic parish church of the Assumption of Mary was built in 1742 by Thannhausen church architect Johann Kaspar Radmiller. Its Baroque hall contains frescoes by J. Christ. The main altarpieces, which change over time, were painted by Franz Xaver Abele, while the side altarpieces are by Konrad Huber. There is also a painting of the Crucifixion by L. Hundertpfund and choir stalls by Thannhausen cabinetmaker Ferdinand Zech. The furnishings thus bring together works by several painters and a local cabinetmaker.
The St. Leonhard Chapel at the eastern entrance to town dates from an earlier period. It was built around 1600 and is one of the oldest buildings in the town. Dating from around 1600, the chapel is considerably older than the parish church, built in 1742.
Monument, former courthouse and clothmakers’ house
The monument to Christoph von Schmid, created by F. Miller, has stood in front of the town hall since 1901. Von Schmid worked in Thannhausen from 1796 to 1816 as a writer, benefice holder and school director. His works include “Ostereier” and “Ihr Kinderlein kommet”. The monument thus commemorates someone who held several roles in the town over an extended period before being honored.
The former courthouse, dating from 1673, stands on Dr.-Georg-und-Lu-Zimmermann-Platz. Its gable was given a Baroque design by Kaspar Radmiller. The Bierbrunnen (beer fountain), designed by Thannhausen architect and city councilor Monika WiesmĂĽller-Schwab, is also on this square. It is the only drinking-water fountain in the town of Mindel.
The listed clothmakers’ house is also part of the town’s history: the local heritage association established a town museum there, using exhibits collected over many years. In 1987, the town made the house available to the association for this purpose. The historic building and its use as a museum are two distinct aspects of the site; check current visitor information separately before making specific plans.
Art in public spaces and theatre
The Brenninger Trail is an art trail with twelve stops and also a walking route through Thannhausen. It follows the works of sculptor Georg Brenninger. Unlike a single monument, the trail itself leads through the town and brings together several stops associated with one artist.
The Burgstalltheater Burg e.V. offers another cultural option: every few years, it stages a new production at the open-air theatre in Burg. As there may not be a current performance schedule, check the dates in advance if you are planning a theatre visit.
Wakeboarding and practical information
At Turncable Wakepark in Thannhausen, you can go wakeboarding and water skiing. This provides a clearly defined focus on water sports alongside the town’s historic and artistic attractions. Before your visit, check the wakepark’s current operating details if you plan to take part in the activity.
There is also a Flexibus stop at Turncable: Thannhausen No. 1 “Wakeboard”. If you plan to use this stop for your journey, check the current service details in advance. This lets you tailor your plans to the occasion without assuming a particular timetable or operating hours.
