Discover Orne: gorges, wetlands and heritage
Accommodation in Orne
In the Orne département, diverse natural landscapes meet trails and cultural sites offering a wide range of ways to explore. La Roche d’Oëtre opens up views over the Gorges de la Rouvre; elsewhere, paths wind through wetlands and forests, while historic sites offer insights into architecture and equestrian culture. When planning your trip, it is worth first deciding whether you mainly want to hike, explore nature or visit cultural attractions.
Gorges, forests and wetlands
Orne’s rich and diverse natural heritage includes forests, wetlands and streams. Two regional natural parks help preserve local flora and fauna as well as local traditions. The Gorges de la Rouvre make a striking impression on the landscape: La Roche d’Oëtre rises more than 100 metres above them.
The Marais du Grand-Hazé covers 200 hectares of ponds, peat bogs, reed beds and peat forests. It is considered a leading bird-breeding site in Orne, with 170 species recorded there. A 1.8-kilometre botanical trail focuses on trees, hedgerows and the bocage landscape. This means visitors can discover the wetland not only by its size, but also through the plant life along the trail.
The Gorges de Villiers offer a different natural setting: Armorican sandstone cliffs, scree slopes, heathland, a spring and a fast-flowing river shape the gorges. There is also a hot spring, which belongs to the Bagnoles-de-l’Orne thermal spa and was revered as far back as Roman times.
Walking trails to suit different distances and landscapes
At La Roche d’Oëtre, marked trails of 2.5, 5 and 9 kilometres are open year-round. The marked trail in the Gorges de Villiers is also 2.5 kilometres long and open year-round. La Roche therefore offers several distances to choose from, while the trail in the Gorges de Villiers combines the same shorter distance with a gorge landscape. Check local access conditions before setting out.
Another trail runs through the Forêt de Bourse: the 2.5-kilometre nature trail passes ponds, old oak trees, the Vezone and a former railway line. For a longer hiking trip, consider the GR®22. This four-day route passes through Alençon, Carrouges, Bagnoles-de-l’Orne and medieval Domfront. It runs through preserved landscapes and is considered an accessible long-distance hiking trail.
Further into Orne, the Perche offers its own distinctive character. There, hiking, cycling and horse riding go hand in hand with a preserved landscape of manor houses, castles, gardens and abbeys. Local produce is also part of the region’s culinary appeal after outings on foot, by bike or on horseback.
Historic sites and visitor experiences
The Manoir de Courboyer dates from the late 15th century and combines Flamboyant Gothic with Renaissance elements. Three floors are open to visitors. Self-guided visits are available year-round; guided tours are offered in summer, and group bookings are possible throughout the year. As visiting arrangements may change, it is advisable to check the latest information before your trip.
The history of the Haras national du Pin dates back to the orders of Louis XIV. The stud farm is set in a landscaped estate of more than 1,000 hectares. A visit includes the historic centre, with its courtyard of honour, stables, harness room, carriage collection and discovery trail. The programme also includes horse shows, carriage rides, pony activities and trips by electric bike or golf cart. Visitors can also learn about farriery and saddle-making; the specific programme may vary by season.
In Domfront, the medieval town is freely accessible year-round. Guided tours are available throughout the year by appointment. Orne therefore offers both historic sites that are freely accessible and visits with set arrangements. When choosing a hotel, you can take your planned priorities into account: walking trails, natural areas and cultural sites each offer different reasons to spend time in the region.
