Berjou brings together a precise perspective on the history of remembrance with trails and landscapes in the Noireau Valley. The Blackwater Museum 39/45 focuses on the fighting during the liberation of the commune; walking trails vary in length and route, while the Vélo Rail des Collines Normandes offers another way to explore the valley and its railway history. This makes it possible to discover the area both through its history and through specific activities.

Museum and liberation history

The Blackwater Museum 39/45 traces the fighting from 15 to 17 August 1944 around the Noireau, which took place during the liberation of the commune of Berjou. Exhibits include photographs, mannequins and objects found on the battlefield. The museum therefore presents local history through a range of exhibits.

Every year, the museum holds the Berjou Liberation Festival to commemorate 17 August 1944. The distinction is important for understanding the dates: the fighting covered the period from 15 to 17 August, while the recurring commemoration refers to 17 August. Visitors drawn to Berjou by its history can therefore find both an account of the events at the time and an annual commemoration linked to a specific date.

The Noireau Valley and its varied slopes

In the Noireau Valley area, Berjou is part of the Natura 2000 site “Vallée de l’Orne et ses affluents”. The slopes in this landscape differ considerably: sunny, rocky slopes are characterised by heathland vegetation adapted to dry conditions. Gentler slopes have more species-rich meadows and denser woodland.

This contrast offers a distinctive way to explore the landscape around Berjou. If you are interested in nature and terrain, you can also look out for the different landscape features as you read the trail descriptions.

Choose walking trails by length and route

The “Circuit n°27 – Sur les pentes boisées de Berjou” is a 17.2-kilometre circular trail through the Norman countryside, woods and fields. Along the way, there are views of the Noireau Valley and its tributaries, the Vère and Casse-cou. Its name and description link the route to the wooded slopes, while the viewpoints draw attention to the valley and its waterways.

The circular trail “Berjou de haut en bas” is route number 10, is 16.9 kilometres long and starts at Berjou church. It runs from the upper Noireau Valley along the Chemin des Oiseaux and down towards the village of Pont-Erambourg. The stated lengths of the two longer circular trails differ by only 0.3 kilometres; their descriptions focus on different things: one on landscapes, woods, fields and valley views, the other on the route along the Chemin des Oiseaux towards Pont-Erambourg.

The historic circular trail “Berjou, août 44” is considerably shorter, at 6.5 kilometres. These three distances provide a practical basis for choosing in advance by length. If you are particularly interested in local history, you can also take the trail’s historic name into account; the two longer circular trails can be distinguished by their respective descriptions of the landscape and route.

Vélo Rail and railway history

The Vélo Rail des Collines Normandes is a 13-kilometre round trip between Pont-Erambourg and Berjou. The experience includes an exhibition in former postal carriages. It covers the valley’s historical and natural environment, as well as railway history. This means that, alongside the walking trails, the valley environment and the railway are also explored as distinct themes.

When planning your trip, you can start by deciding what draws you to Berjou: its liberation history, a walking trail of a particular length, or a Vélo Rail journey with its accompanying exhibition. Then, when you look for a hotel in Berjou, you will have a clear idea of which themes you want your stay to focus on.
