When choosing a destination, Cahan offers two concrete points of interest: hiking routes of different lengths, as well as natural and cultural history. The GR® de Pays Tour de la Suisse Normande passes through Cahan; a separate circular route starts in Les Planches in the village. Other highlights include the landscape of the “Coteaux siliceux des vallées de l’Orne et du Noireau” area, the Chapelle Saint-Roch and botanist Pierre Tranquille Husnot.

Hiking routes of different lengths

The GR® de Pays Tour de la Suisse Normande is a six-day hiking route covering 113 km. Near Cahan, it passes through the village, with the church on the right. The church is therefore a specific landmark in the route directions.

Circular route no. 9 starts in Les Planches in Cahan. It is 14.8 km long, with an 11.1 km alternative. By comparison, the GR® is a considerably longer option, covering 113 km over six days. The two routes therefore differ both in length and in their connection to Cahan: the GR® passes through the village, while the circular route starts there. When planning, you can consider whether the longer, six-day route or one of the two circular-route distances is better suited to your plans.

Landscape and habitats

Cahan is one of the municipalities in the “Coteaux siliceux des vallées de l’Orne et du Noireau” area. There, steep slopes on the Armorican Massif overlook the meanders of the Orne and Noireau rivers. The area is home to rare habitats: siliceous grasslands on shallow soils, rock slabs, thermophilous meadows, ravine forests, heathland and inland cliffs. This range extends from grasslands and rock slabs to forests and heathland. If you take landscape and habitats into account alongside routes when choosing a destination, the area offers further specific points of interest.

Chapelle Saint-Roch and its frescoes

The Chapelle Saint-Roch on the Plateau des Hogues is a stop on the Cahan circular route. It dates from the mid-16th century and overlooks the valleys of the Orne and Noireau. The chapel features 70 m² of frescoes painted by Maurice Le Scouëzec in 1932. The cultural site can thus be viewed across two periods: the chapel’s construction in the 16th century and the 20th-century frescoes.

Pierre Tranquille Husnot

The renowned botanist Pierre Tranquille Husnot was born in Cahan. Circular route no. 9 is titled “Avec Pierre Tranquille Husnot” (“With Pierre Tranquille Husnot”), referring to his local biography. The small Protestant cemetery where Husnot is buried is near his birthplace, the hamlet of La Bijude. His birth in Cahan, the route title and his grave near La Bijude connect several local points of interest to his story.
