La Genevraie’s historical character can be understood through several distinct landmarks: the Benedictine Notre-Dame Priory, the parish church of Saint-Laurent and the Château de la Genevraie. Their dates span the 12th to the early 19th century. Alongside ecclesiastical architecture and art history, horse breeding is also part of the area’s character. If you are looking for a hotel in La Genevraie, this historical diversity provides a thematic backdrop for planning your trip.

Notre-Dame: from priory to abbey

The Benedictine Notre-Dame Priory was founded around 1160 by Fouque II, Baron of Merle and Messei. In 1181, Pope Alexander III recognized the priory as an abbey by papal bull. The chronology therefore shows two stages: its foundation around 1160 and its later recognition as an abbey. Just over two decades lie between the two dates; they mark distinct steps in the priory’s medieval history.

An 1882 description lists a kitchen, a refectory, some cells used as a barn and the ruins of a chapel among the remains of the Benedictine priory. A refectory is the dining hall of a monastic community. Along with the kitchen and cells, the term points to daily life and provisions, while the chapel belongs to the religious sphere. The site can thus also be understood through the different functions of the rooms described at the time.

Saint-Laurent: architectural history and works of art

The present-day parish church of Saint-Laurent was built around 1820 near the former church. This proximity is part of its architectural history: the present church and its predecessor are two distinct stages. Compared with the medieval priory, Saint-Laurent points to a later period in the area’s ecclesiastical history.

The Église Saint-Laurent has a large altarpiece dating from the second half of the 17th century. An altarpiece is an altar decoration; this work therefore dates from an earlier period than the construction of the present-day church around 1820. The parish church also houses the sculptural group “La chasse de saint Hubert.” The dated altarpiece and the named sculptural group offer different points of interest: one through its date of creation, the other through its specific title.

The Château and horse breeding

The Château de la Genevraie was built in 1768 on the site of an older château. Around 1820, Marie Louis Achille Perier established a stud farm in the château. Approximately half a century separates the château’s construction from the establishment of the stud farm. This makes it possible to distinguish architectural history and horse breeding as successive themes: a château was built on a site already used for a château, followed by the establishment of a stud farm.

The grounds of Haras de La Genevraye

Haras de La Genevraye covers 450 hectares of contiguous land: 250 hectares of pasture and 200 hectares of woodland. The stated area of pasture is therefore 50 hectares greater than the woodland area. These figures show both the total area and its division by land type. Land-use figures may change over time.
