Sées: Culture, History and Nature
Accommodation in Sées
Sées brings together sacred art, architectural history and nature. When choosing your destination, consider whether you are mainly interested in collections, historic buildings or nature. The Musée départemental d’art religieux brings together works from different artistic fields and periods; the Basilique, Palais, abbey and Cours des Fontaines each offer their own historical points of interest. The “Sées, in the Footsteps of Mother Nature” trail adds themes of fauna, flora, water and geology. This allows you to plan a stay around a particular focus rather than limiting it to a single theme.
Sacred Art in the Museum
The collections at the Musée départemental d’art religieux in Sées range from painting and sculpture to goldsmithing, woodworking and liturgical textiles. Their timeline begins in the Romanesque period and extends to the present day. Alongside paintings and sculptural works, the collections also highlight different materials and crafts. A particular highlight is the silver reliquaries from the former Abbey of Saint-Évroult. A reliquary is a container for relics; these pieces connect sacred art with the former abbey. With “Hors les murs,” the museum also offers digital access to more than 1,000 works, including 300 three-dimensional models. This digital offering provides another way to explore the works alongside the museum’s collections.
Architectural History Across Different Periods
The dates of the buildings highlight different periods. The Basilique de l’Immaculée Conception was built in 1854 in the Neo-Gothic style. Neo-Gothic architecture revives forms from the Gothic period; in the case of the Basilique, this style is associated with a specific year of construction. The Palais d’Argentré was a bishop’s palace and was classified as a historic monument in 1908. The history of the Abbey of Saint-Martin reaches further back: it was founded in the 4th century and rebuilt in the 10th, 12th and 18th centuries. The Cours des Fontaines is a classified site featuring the Maison de l’École de dressage and an 18th-century washhouse. The 18th century thus figures both in the abbey’s rebuilding history and in the date of the washhouse; for the Basilique, by contrast, a single year of construction is given.
Nature and Planning Your Visit
The “Sées, in the Footsteps of Mother Nature” trail explores the city’s fauna, flora, water and geology. It is 3 km long and takes about 1 hour 30 minutes. Its length and approximate duration give you two specific points of reference for planning your time; the duration is only an estimate. Sées is also close to the Forêt d’Écouves. The trail and the forest offer two different ways to explore the natural surroundings of Sées.
The Cathédrale de Sées is open daily from 9 a.m. to 6 p.m., except during services. Check these hours before your trip if you plan to visit the cathedral. The other buildings, the museum and the trail each offer a different focus: art collections, clearly dated architectural history or nature. Choose according to what interests you most during your stay, and use the trail details as an approximate guide to the time required.
