Bellou-En-Houlme: Hiking, Nature and Heritage
Accommodation in Bellou-En-Houlme
For planning a stay in Bellou-en-Houlme, the hiking trails offer particularly specific points of reference: both the distance and duration are given for two circular routes. Nature and heritage provide further areas of interest. If you are looking for a hotel, you can consider how much time to set aside for a hike and which themes you would like to include in your travel plans.
Comparing hiking routes
Circular route No. 15, “Les crêtes,” starts in Bellou-en-Houlme and is listed as 14 kilometres long, with a duration of 3 hours 30 minutes. The Domaine de Dieufit can also be seen from the trail. Circular route No. 14, “Le Breuil,” starts at the church next to the town hall; it is listed as 18 kilometres long, with a duration of 4 hours 30 minutes. The stated figures for the two hikes therefore differ by four kilometres and one hour. Check these before setting out. The brochure for No. 14 is older; also verify the trail conditions and signage on site.
Marais du Grand Hazé: circular trail and birdlife
A shorter trail option is the Sentier du Breuil in the Marais du Grand Hazé, listed as four kilometres for the round trip. It is open year-round; maintenance work or weather may temporarily affect access. If you plan to take the trail, it is therefore a good idea to check conditions before your visit.
The Marais du Grand Hazé is the most significant bird breeding area in the Orne department. 170 bird species have been recorded there. The circular trail and the birdlife offer two different reasons to explore the marshland: you can factor the trail’s length into your schedule while also treating the natural environment as a focus in its own right.
Château de Dieufit and agricultural heritage
Château de Dieufit was built in 1862 as a model farm. Principles of industrial organisation were applied to agriculture. This historical concept makes the estate more than just a name on a map: it points to an organised form of agricultural operation in the 19th century.
The estate still features the porter’s and gardener’s houses, buildings with a pigsty and stables, a former coach house, and a central livestock watering trough. These preserved structures give an impression of the different functions that made up a model farm. The château is partially listed as a “Monument historique.”
Culture and local offerings
The Médiathèque de Bellou-en-Houlme is open to everyone. Documents can be consulted and borrowed there free of charge. The médiathèque also regularly hosts conferences, exhibitions, readings and meet-ups. If you would like to attend a particular event, check the current programme and opening hours, as both may change.
In 2024, the Ferme du Breuil planned farm and hay-drying barn tours, tastings, and two-hour guided group visits. Check the current visiting options before travelling. This keeps the timing of the offering clear while allowing you to find out which visits can currently be arranged.
At “Aux 3 étangs,” trout fishing is available on a 12-hectare site, where trout are regularly restocked. Operating conditions may change. If you plan to go fishing, check the current conditions before your visit.
