If you are considering Briouze as a destination for a stay, the Marais du Grand Hazé is what gives the place its distinctive natural character. There are also hiking trails of varying lengths and opening periods, as well as the Romanesque Chapelle Saint-Gervais. This combination offers some pointers to help you decide what you want your visit to focus on before looking for a hotel in Briouze.

The Marais du Grand Hazé

This wetland landscape covers 200 hectares and includes ponds, peat bogs, reed beds and peaty woodland. The Marais du Grand Hazé in Briouze is designated a Natura 2000 site. Of particular interest to birdwatchers is its importance as the leading bird breeding site in the Orne department: 170 bird species have been recorded in the area. The site also has an ornithological observatory. As temporary closures may occur, check access information before your visit.

Near the marsh is a 1.8-kilometre botanical educational trail. There, you can learn about trees, hedgerows and the bocage landscape. This allows you to combine views of the wetland with a trail dedicated to plants and the landscape shaped by hedgerows.

Hiking trails by length and season

For planning purposes, the two trails differ mainly in length and opening period. The Sentier du Breuil is four kilometres long and open year-round. The Boucle du marais is a 6.7-kilometre circular walking route; it is open from 15 April to 15 October. This information can help you weigh up the length of each trail and the right time to visit, without comparing the routes in terms of difficulty when no such information is available. Check access information before setting out.

The Circuit Saint-Gervais–Briouze also offers a way to explore the surrounding area on foot. The route description starts at the Chapelle Saint-Gervais; you can also walk the trail from Briouze church. The circular route includes a viewpoint overlooking Briouze and the marsh. This route therefore combines a view of the town with one of the wetland.

Greenway and bicycle lockers

For a cycling stay, the voie verte between Briouze and Bagnoles-de-l’Orne is another option to consider: it follows a former railway line. At Gare de Briouze, bicycle lockers are available where you can leave and secure your bike while visiting the marsh on foot. You will need to bring your own lock. Check the lockers’ availability before travelling; this does not guarantee that they will be available for use at the time.

Romanesque architecture in Briouze

The Chapelle Saint-Gervais is a Romanesque granite building. Guillaume de Briouze had it built between 1080 and 1093; originally, it was laid out in the shape of a Latin cross. The portal offers a glimpse of a later stage in its history: it was reassembled in 1867 and has four columns with sculpted capitals. Flat buttresses frame the Romanesque portal.

Briouze brings together a range of attractions: wetlands and birdlife, trails for walking or following the former railway line, and a Romanesque building with a precisely recorded construction date. If you would like to include nature and hiking in your travel plans, you can use these features as a guide and then look for a hotel in Briouze for your stay.
