Camembert links the name of a famous Norman cheese with places connected to its history and production. When planning your trip, you can choose from several specific attractions in the village: the Maison du Camembert museum, two cheese producers, the Notre-Dame et Sainte-Anne church and cycling routes associated with Camembert. Depending on whether you are most interested in cheese, architectural history or a cycling tour, the focus of your stay will vary.

Cheese history on a farm

The Maison du Camembert is housed in an authentic 18th-century Norman farmhouse in the village of Camembert. The museum traces the history of the famous Norman cheese and its production secrets over time. Its story spans everything from traditional production on Norman farms to today's cheese dairies. Camembert de Normandie also takes its name from the village of Camembert. At the end of the visit, a platter with three pieces of Camembert is available, allowing you to compare pasteurized, thermized and raw-milk Camembert.

Cheese production and local cheese

In the village center, the Fromagerie de Beaumoncel produces hand-ladled farmhouse Camembert de Normandie AOP. The Fromagerie Durand makes authentic raw-milk Camembert AOP and shapes it using a ladle. The two producers offer different insights into production: Beaumoncel focuses on farmhouse production and ladling, while Durand highlights raw milk and shaping with a ladle.

The Fromagerie Durand also offers a self-guided tour along an outdoor gallery. From there, you can see the shaping room, the salting room and the ripening rooms. While the museum explores how cheese-making has evolved, the tour focuses on these production areas. The Fromagerie Durand shop sells cheese and cream made there, as well as local products; the range may change. The cheese platter, tour and shop offering may change; check what is available before your trip.

The church and pilgrimage history

The Notre-Dame et Sainte-Anne church dates mainly from the 16th century. Its rectangular structure is built of limestone and rubble stone, with a slate spire rising above the west façade. Inside the church is a painted wooden work from the 16th century entitled “Education de la Vierge”. Another painting, created by Pingard in 1772, commemorates the pilgrimage made by the Camembert parish confraternity to Mont-Saint-Michel on September 24, 1772. The building's design, sacred art and a specific pilgrimage date thus offer different perspectives on local history.

Cycling routes linked to Camembert

Two cycling routes are also linked to the village. The 26 km circular route “A vélo – Pays du Camembert” runs between Vimoutiers and the village of Camembert, following in Marie Harel's footsteps. The “Vélo et Fromages de Camembert à Livarot” route starts in the village of Camembert. When planning, you can therefore choose between a circular tour with a stated distance and route, and a route that starts in the village. Route details and conditions may change; check them before setting off.
