Lonlay-L'abbaye: Nature, Abbey and Regional Produce
Accommodation in Lonlay-L'abbaye
Natural landscapes, abbey history, and regional produce offer different ways to experience a trip to Lonlay-L'abbaye.
Natural Landscapes and Walks
Lonlay-L'abbaye is part of the Landes du Tertre Bizet et Fosse Arthour Natura 2000 site, a Special Area of Conservation under the Habitats Directive. The site includes forests, heathland with heather, some steep rocky outcrops, and scree slopes. The rocky outcrops give the landscape a different character from the forests and heathland; the scree slopes add another type of terrain to the description. The area's landscape therefore includes both wooded and open spaces, as well as rocky terrain.
From 16 April to 20 October 2026, the Parc Naturel Régional Normandie-Maine is offering seven nature walks at Fosse Arthour. In 2026, they are free of charge, last approximately two hours, and start at the Fosse Arthour car park. For planning purposes, note the distinction: the dates are specific, while the duration is only approximate. If you would like to take part, check your preferred date against the scheduled period. For future editions, please check the dates announced at the time.
Abbey and Building History
Notre-Dame de Lonlay Abbey is classified as a historic monument and preserves much of its Romanesque and Gothic architecture. Romanesque and Gothic styles offer two art-historical points of reference for understanding the buildings. The town's history also includes the foundation of a Benedictine abbey in Lonlay-L'abbaye in the 11th century by Guillaume I of Bellême. The foundation date and the architecture thus provide different ways to explore the history of the town.
Tours and Regional Produce
At Château de la Bière, tours about hop cultivation and beer production are available by advance reservation. They include explanations of the brewing equipment, a tasting afterwards, and direct sales at the château. The tour covers everything from growing hops to making and tasting beer; direct sales are also part of the offer.
Tours of the Biscuiterie de l'Abbaye workshop are available only by advance reservation. The Biscuiterie's Sablé de l'Abbaye product was created in 1941. The two culinary tour themes differ: at the château, the focus is on hops and beer production, including a tasting; at the Biscuiterie, it is on the workshop. The Sablé adds its own product history to this second theme.
For your hotel planning, the activities can be distinguished by their timing: the nature walks are tied to dates in 2026 and last approximately two hours, while both tours require a reservation. If you are looking for a hotel in Lonlay-L'abbaye, coordinate your travel dates with the nature program or arrange tours in advance. This will help you plan your stay around the activities you want to include.
