La Forêt-Auvray stands on a rocky promontory above the Orne Valley. Several hiking trails begin in the village and lead through bocage or woodland landscapes. The château, church and old market halls give the village’s history a tangible presence. If you are considering La Forêt-Auvray as a destination, you can shape your stay around outdoor outings, animal encounters and historical themes.

Plan hiking trails by landscape and duration

The route En passant par l’Anjou begins beside the church and the old market halls. It follows the red-and-white-marked GR 36 and is an easy walk of about two hours. Check the local trail markers before setting out.

Route 15 of the Suisse Normande Trail also starts at the market halls. It passes through typical bocage countryside, with hedgerows, meadows and woodland. Route 14 by Suisse Normande Outdoor also begins in La Forêt-Auvray; its hilly route combines different paths with narrow single-track trails. Circuit n°13 – La Forêt-Auvray – La Héraudière starts in the village and crosses varied terrain, mostly through woodland. Along the way, broad paths alternate with narrow single-track trails.

The landscapes offer different highlights: Route 15 focuses on the hedgerows, meadows and woodland of the bocage, while woodland predominates on Circuit n°13. Route 14 is characterized by hilly terrain and a succession of different path types. This allows you to compare route descriptions by landscape without treating the trails as equivalent. The time estimates also provide a point of reference: the easy route En passant par l’Anjou takes about two hours; the nature walks offered by 4 Pat'Balad last 1.5 hours. You can check the route and trail markers locally before setting off.

Nature walks and pony activities

4 Pat'Balad offers nature walks with cows and ponies in La Forêt-Auvray. They last 1.5 hours and take place near the GR 36. Check the booking and operating details in advance.

Short introductory pony-riding lessons are available for children aged 5 to 12. This offer is seasonal, so check availability before your trip. The activity Goûters de Holla is a six-kilometre discovery tour with cows for children in the same age group. Check the age requirements and booking details in advance for this activity too. The three offers differ in duration, animal encounters and type of activity—useful criteria when matching your itinerary to the time you have available.

Château, church and protected village heritage

The Château de la Forêt-Auvray is a Huguenot fortress built in the 16th century. It was modified in the 17th century and had been built on a medieval fortification dating from the 14th century. The quadrangular complex has walls and parapets, four corner towers, and a sturdy wooden bridge over the perimeter wall. The fortification, including its towers, gate and moats, has been protected as a historic monument under the decree of 9 April 2002.

The church, former cemetery and old market halls are also part of a protected site. It was designated in May 1943 to preserve a picturesque village centre. Saint-Pierre Church has a single-nave layout. The old market halls are another part of the protected ensemble; the northern market hall is still open and has picnic tables. Check the condition of the facilities locally before your visit.

The village’s older heritage also includes the surviving remains of a mill dating from 1125. The Menhir de La Rousselière is associated with local legends. Together with the fortification, these sites create a historical arc from medieval traces to the Huguenot fortress.
