Eure: Nature, culture and hotels

Eure combines extensive wetlands with cycle paths, gardens, art venues and historic sites. The places and activities below offer practical starting points for planning.

Wetlands and trails through nature

Marais Vernier is a 4,500-hectare wetland formed in an ancient meander of the Seine. It is also home to Les Courtils, a protected natural area in Eure with rare and endangered wetland plants. The landscape thus combines the character of a vast wetland with a designated protected area and its distinctive flora.

The Poudres-Bouafles site features remarkable plant communities with rare plant and animal species. The Sentier des Rossignols trail runs through the site and offers opportunities for walks. Those who prefer to experience nature along a trail will find a different perspective here than in the vast Marais Vernier. Check current trail conditions before setting out for a walk.

Cycling and getting to Giverny

For cycling trips, two routes offer different scales. The Vallée de l’Eure à vélo is 170 kilometres long and connects Chartres with Rouen, following greenways along former railway lines. La Seine à Vélo covers more than 510 kilometres between Paris and Le Havre or Deauville. The route lengths help give an idea of the overall distances, but do not indicate which sections are suitable for your travel dates. Check the signage and any route changes before setting off.

For Giverny, Vernon-Giverny station is a starting point for visitors following in the footsteps of the Impressionists. From there, you can reach Giverny by electric shuttle or narrated tourist train. Nomad-Car line 208 connects Gisors and Vernon and also serves Giverny. Cycling from Vernon to Giverny along La Seine à Vélo takes about 20 minutes. Art, gardens and history

The Musée des Impressionnismes Giverny is devoted to the international Impressionist movement, Post-Impressionism and later developments. The Château de Vascœuil offers another connection to art: its park and French garden are home to more than 50 permanent original sculptures. The château also houses the Musée Jules Michelet, which is linked to Michelet’s stays at the estate and his writing there. The château, garden, museum and contemporary art bring past and present together along a visitor route.

In Évreux, the Musée d’Art, Histoire et Archéologie d’Evreux has held the official “Musée de France” designation under French heritage law since 2003. For medieval history, other points of interest include the Château Médiéval de Montfort-sur-Risle, which dates from the 11th or 12th century and is connected with the history of the Norman dukes; from there, views extend across the valley.

Château Gaillard was built by Richard Cœur de Lion between 1196 and 1198 on a rocky promontory 90 metres above the Seine. The site offers panoramic views over the Seine Valley, and the banks of the Seine by Château Gaillard lie within a Natura 2000 zone. Hiking and climbing on the cliffs are associated with sporting activities. The castle’s history, the ridge and the protected landscape each offer a distinct focus.

Water activities and regional produce

The Parc de loisirs de Léry-Poses is located at the confluence of the Eure and Seine and offers a range of water activities. Biotropica, a zoological park, is also located on the same site. Other activities in Eure include canoe trips on calm rivers and treetop adventure courses; whether a particular activity is available on your travel dates depends on the operator.

Local produce and farm visits can also shape your trip. Ferme des Amélias produces Camembert, cider and yoghurt on site and offers tastings. Guided farm and cheese-making visits are also available there in the Pays d’Ouche. Check the arrangements for visits in advance. The Fête de la Pomme, du Cidre et du Fromage is held at the arboretum in Conches, with local producers and craftspeople; dates and programme are seasonal.
