Harcourt: Château, Arboretum and Church History
Accommodation in Harcourt
Harcourt brings together historical and botanical attractions, including the Château d'Harcourt, the arboretum and the Église Saint-Ouen. If you are looking for hotels in Harcourt, you can plan your stay around architecture, plant life or an event date. Be sure to check both the château’s access conditions and the latest programme details.
Visiting the château and its grounds
On August 20, 2026, the interior of the Château d'Harcourt was not open to the public while conservation work was underway. Visitors could, however, explore the outdoor areas, including the castle courtyard and the path along the ramparts. Before travelling, check whether access conditions have changed, especially if you are planning to visit the interior.
Arboretum and forest
The Arboretum d'Harcourt was established in 1802 as a project by Louis-Gervais Delamarre to plant, trial and acclimatise trees from around the world. Today, it includes more than 500 tree species from around the world; some trees are over 200 years old. The site can therefore be understood both through its origins as a horticultural trial project and through the age of individual trees. The stated number of species may change as plantings are updated.
The nature offering also includes part of the forest on the Domaine d'Harcourt, which is designated as an Espace Naturel Sensible and can be explored by visitors. Unlike the arboretum, shaped by its collection and planting history, the focus here is on part of the designated natural area.
Church and cultural programme
The Église Saint-Ouen d'Harcourt is classified as a Monument historique. Its choir is the oldest part of the building and dates to the 13th century. This date therefore applies to the choir, not to the entire church. Several concerts, as well as conferences and guided tours about the history of the site, are held at the church every year. If a particular concert or tour is important to your trip, check the current programme.
In 2026, the Automnales d'Harcourt will celebrate their 20th anniversary; botanical discoveries and other activities for plant and garden enthusiasts are planned for October 17 and 18. Alongside the recurring annual events at the Église Saint-Ouen, this is a specific event scheduled for October. Check the dates and programme before travelling, especially if you would like to plan your stay around the Automnales.
