Verneusses can be understood through three distinct themes for trip planning: protected historic buildings, designated landscapes and the educational activities offered by Expérimenthe. The Dolmen de la Grosse Pierre has a specific location in the hamlet of Le Village; parts of the Manoir de Bois-Hébert are protected, and its architectural features have been described. The landscape information, in turn, distinguishes between the part of the Natura 2000 site within the municipality and the larger site as a whole. This can help you decide whether you are primarily interested in architectural history, landscapes or courses and activities when choosing a destination.

Dolmen and manor house: different forms of protection

The Dolmen de la Grosse Pierre is located in the hamlet of Le Village in Verneusses and has been classified as a historic monument since 4 April 1911. The Manoir de Bois-Hébert has been partially protected since 30 October 1974; the protection covers its façades and roofs. The details therefore differ in both subject and scope: the dolmen is classified as a historic monument, while specific parts of the manor house are explicitly included in its protection. This distinction helps when comparing the two historic sites, without treating their forms of protection as equivalent.

The architectural form and remains of an earlier fortification are also central to the Manoir du Bois Hébert. The rectangular main building and polygonal stair tower probably date from around 1500. “Polygonal” describes a floor plan with several sides. The motte and ditches of the former fortification have also survived; the present manor house was built on these remains. The approximate dating applies to the main building and stair tower, while the motte and ditches are described as remains of the earlier complex. This makes it possible to distinguish the architectural features of the manor house from traces of the older fortification.

The landscape of Verneusses and the wider protected-area context

Verneusses lies within the landscape area “Les vallées de la Charentonne et du Guiel,” designated in 1994. In addition, the “Risle, Charentonne, Guiel” Natura 2000 site covers 21.41 hectares of the municipality, equivalent to 1.31 percent of its area. The two figures measure different things: 21.41 hectares is the area of the protected site within Verneusses, while 1.31 percent is its share of the municipality.

The Natura 2000 site covers 4,754 hectares in total. It includes parts of the Risle floodplain landscape and stretches of its tributaries, the Charentonne and the Guiel. This overall description refers to the larger site, while 21.41 hectares indicates the portion within Verneusses. This distinction helps separate the town’s landscape features from the wider geographical scope of the Natura 2000 site.

Nature activities and courses at Expérimenthe

Expérimenthe is an educational farm guided by the values of permaculture. Its offerings include nature activities, creative workshops, courses and training, as well as stays with activities in a yurt. Its focus ranges from nature and creative activities to learning opportunities, making it different from the architectural history of the historic sites.

Courses and weekend programs at Expérimenthe cover permaculture, yoga, natural health, personal development and ecological building. As course content and programs may change over time, check the current offerings before your trip if a particular topic or weekend is important to your plans. When choosing a destination, you can compare these themes directly: protected buildings and their architecture, landscapes at the municipal and wider site levels, or educational courses and activities.
