Bosgouet: Church, château history and circular walk
Accommodation in Bosgouet
Bosgouet brings together several themes that are easy to distinguish during a stay: the architectural history of the Saint-Martin parish church, château history, the Forêt de la Londe-Rouvray and the Boucle Bosgueroise. If you include culture and walking in your travel plans, you will find both specific architectural dates and a named circular route with its distance and average duration. For planning purposes, it is helpful to keep route details separate from dated information about trail conditions.
Saint-Martin parish church: several construction phases
The Saint-Martin parish church stands in the village of Bosgouet; its features include a cemetery and a monumental cross. Its construction history spans several periods: the choir dates from the second half of the 13th century, and its buttresses from the 14th century. Georges Simon built the nave and bell tower from 1866 to 1867. Thus, the dates refer to different parts of the building, not to a single year of construction for the entire church.
A renovation of the village church was reported in the June 2025 municipal bulletin. According to the report, lightning protection was repaired and the interior lighting was replaced with 13 spotlights, among other work. The clock hands and timer were also repaired; the bells and Angelus ringing were brought back into operation.
Château history across different periods
The Château d’Autonne was built in the first half of the 17th century; several windows were altered in the 18th century. Both its construction and subsequent changes to the windows are therefore part of its architectural history.
The present-day château in the village of Bosgouet dates from the second half of the 19th century. A cadastral map from 1826 shows an older château and its outbuildings. These two dates distinguish the earlier property shown on the map from the date of the present-day château.
Forêt de la Londe-Rouvray and the Boucle Bosgueroise
Bosgouet is part of the Forêt de la Londe-Rouvray area, a continental ZNIEFF type 2. This named landscape adds a natural setting to the architectural themes. The Boucle Bosgueroise is a circular walking route that starts in the center of Bosgouet and heads toward the Forêt Domaniale de la Londe state forest.
The route is 8.95 kilometers long, returns to the starting point and is rated easy. Its stated average duration is two hours and 45 minutes. Its length, circular format and average duration provide concrete points of reference for planning your time.
On December 10, 2025, it was reported that the second part of the Boucle was no longer accessible. On September 20, 2024, the section between points 7 and 8 was described as impassable at that time. These notices apply to their respective dates, so check trail conditions before setting out.
