Jumelles lies in the south of the Eure department, in the heart of a cereal-growing plateau. If you are looking for a destination with rural scenery and tangible traces of culture, the village offers several points of interest: green ways, five public ponds, an orchard, a notable walnut tree, and the Church of Saint-Étienne. Mare Verdun is a distinctive blue feature of the village’s natural landscape. You can thus see the landscape and heritage as different aspects of the village.

Landscape, Water, and Walks

A network of green ways is ideal for walks. The paths allow walkers to reach Saint-André-de-l’Eure, Grossœuvre, La Forêt-du-Parc, and Chavigny-Bailleul. These four named destinations give the routes a specific regional connection. Jumelles has five public ponds, including Mare Verdun. An orchard and a notable walnut tree add to the local landscape. The paths offer walks with named destinations, while the ponds and trees reveal another side of the landscape.

Saint-Étienne: Church and Heritage

The Romanesque Church of Saint-Étienne dates from the 11th century and was partly rebuilt in the 16th century, including the addition of new window openings. The church contains two 16th-century statues: Saint Étienne and Saint Jean-Baptiste; both are listed as protected movable cultural property. The furnishings also include a paten by goldsmith Henri Clavel, dating from the last quarter of the 18th century, likewise listed as protected movable cultural property. The church’s Romanesque origins date back to the 11th century; the alterations and statues are from the 16th century, and the paten is from the last quarter of the 18th century.

Other Traces of the Village’s History

Sarcophagi discovered in 1825 within the commune of Jumelles point to ancient or early medieval settlement. The windmill, which no longer exists, remains part of the commune’s visual and historical heritage. The church has survived, the 1825 find points to ancient or early medieval settlement, and the vanished windmill remains part of the commune’s visual and historical heritage.

Crafts and Seasonal Offerings

Across from La Ferme de Jumelles, walkers can choose and cut their own Christmas tree in a small fir plantation. The farm also offers artisanal birch sap in four forms: fresh in spring from late February to March, frozen in autumn in October, pasteurized with lime and available year-round, and as natural soap available year-round. Two forms are seasonal, while two are available throughout the year.

The Foire à tout in Jumelles is scheduled for the first Sunday in September. The fishing competition is scheduled for June or July. The dates differ: a specific Sunday is given for the fair, while a two-month period is given for the competition. If you plan your trip around either event, check the exact date for the relevant year.
