Douains brings together historic buildings, landscaped green spaces and farm produce. If you are considering Douains as a destination for a hotel stay, these different themes may shape your decision: perhaps you are especially interested in architectural history, perhaps in the views of the countryside and nature, or in planning around local produce. The following places give an impression of what makes Douains distinctive, both culturally and locally.

Château de Brécourt and its protected grounds

The present-day Château de Brécourt was built by Jean Jubert in 1635. This building history should be distinguished from its designation as a Monument historique on 28 June 1967. The protected features include the façades and roofs of the château and its outbuildings. Also included are the forecourt with its access bridge and moats, the courtyard of honour, and the moats surrounding the château. Thus, the specified scope includes not only the château itself but also its outbuildings and the listed courtyard and moat areas.

Two different dates are therefore important when placing the château in context: the construction of the present building in the 17th century and its later designation, with its precisely defined scope of protection. The largest of Douains’ many wooded, planted or landscaped areas surrounds Château de Brécourt. History and landscape come together here at a local landmark.

Notre-Dame and the Priory of Saint-Barthélémy

Notre-Dame de Douains can also be viewed through several periods. In August 1026, Richard II, Duke of Normandy, gave the church of Douains, dedicated to the Virgin Mary, to the Abbey of Fécamp. Later evidence concerns specific features and artwork: the square bell tower was built between the late 16th and early 17th centuries; the church houses a 14th-century stone statue of the Virgin and Child. The early gift, the tower and the statue thus represent different historical points of reference.

The Priory of Saint-Barthélémy offers another chapter. It originated as a chapel and a manor house, both built by the Abbey of Ivry. At Notre-Dame, the focus is on the 1026 gift, as well as the tower and statue from later centuries; the priory, by contrast, is notable for its origins in the chapel and manor house. These distinct histories offer two points of interest for travellers interested in ecclesiastical and monastic architecture.

Green spaces and nature

The local landscape includes many wooded, planted or landscaped areas. The largest surrounds Château de Brécourt. The Mare de Gournay offers a different focus: it is one of two designated areas in Douains within the Zone Naturelle d’Intérêt Écologique, Floristique et Faunistique (ZNIEFF). The designation indicates ecological, botanical and faunal interest. The landscaped grounds around the château and the designated Mare de Gournay area thus represent different aspects of the local landscape. If nature and landscape influence your choice of destination, this adds another dimension to the historic buildings.

Farm produce

At Ferme de la Sablonnière, sales conditions vary by product. Chickens, chicken legs, chicken fillets, free-range eggs and potatoes are available for collection at the farm by advance order. Cider, apple juice, honey and chicken rillettes are available at the farm on organised sales days without an advance order. The poultry sold there is raised in accordance with the “Label Rouge volailles de Normandie” requirements.

For planning purposes, it is useful to distinguish between products available by advance order and those sold on organised sales days: the same conditions do not apply to all the products listed. As local sales information may change, it is best to check the current sales days and ordering conditions in advance. This will help you assess whether buying from the farm fits your plans for your stay, without confusing the different offerings.
