Vascœuil is a destination for travellers who want to combine art and cultural history with gardens. At its heart is the Château de Vascœuil. The grounds, which can be visited together, include the park and gardens, the Musée Michelet, the Colombier and the Château with its ongoing exhibition. A visit thus ranges from historic buildings and literary heritage to sculptures and landscaped grounds. As the exhibition may change, it is worth checking the current programme before your visit.

Art and history around the Château

The Colombier dates from the 17th century and retains its original timber framework. A movable ladder is also part of the historic structure. Both details make the building interesting to anyone who, on an outing, pays attention not only to artworks but also to distinctive features of craftsmanship and architecture. The Colombier offers a different way to explore the history of the estate from the rooms associated with Jules Michelet.

The Musée Jules Michelet is housed in an outbuilding dating from the 18th century and is dedicated to the historian. His study has been faithfully reconstructed at the top of the château tower. The museum and the reconstructed study therefore offer different points of focus: one place bears Michelet’s name, while the other presents a faithfully recreated working environment. Together with the Colombier and the Château, they make for a visit that brings together different historical themes and types of buildings.

The Château de Vascœuil – Maison Michelet has been awarded the Maisons des Illustres label. The Château was inaugurated as a Centre d’Art et d’Histoire in 1970. These two details add to the impressions visitors can experience on site by conveying the château’s cultural focus and institutional history, without assigning a specific theme to the current exhibition.

Gardens, landscape and sculptures

The estate includes a formal French garden designed in 1774. The English landscape park, meanwhile, features river meanders and cascades, as well as an oak several centuries old. The garden areas thus bring together different design styles and landscape features: the formal garden layout, the winding river landscape and the cascades. The ancient oak adds its own distinctive touch, shaped over a long period of growth.

The Parc de Sculptures at the Château de Vascœuil is an open-air gallery. Its permanent collection includes around fifty original works in bronze, marble, ceramics and mosaic. The different materials offer a range of impressions as you walk around, while the works remain part of the garden experience. It is also useful for planning to note that the park and gardens are not a standalone item alongside the Château: the visit covers the entire estate, including the museum, Colombier and Château with its ongoing exhibition.
