Rakovník District: Castles, the Berounka and railway history
Accommodation in Rakovník District
The Křivoklát region lies in the southeast of Rakovník District. The Berounka flows through it from west to east. The region’s deep forests were once used by rulers from Prague for relaxation and hunting. The area was declared a protected landscape area in 1978. The river landscape, forests and history offer visitors a variety of reasons to travel here.
The Berounka, forests and trails
Along the river, the Skryjská jezírka protected area and a fossil museum are among the natural and museum attractions. Křivoklátsko and Rakovnicko offer numerous trails for cycling and hiking. A nature trail leads from Mutějovice railway station to the stone rows of Kounov. Trail conditions may change, so check the latest information shortly before your visit.
Křivoklát Castle: two tours, different highlights
Křivoklát Castle dates back to the 12th century. On a full castle tour, you will see, among other things, the library, picture gallery and Fürstenberg Museum; the ramparts and the Great Cylindrical Tower are also included. Because of the many stairs, this tour is physically demanding. Křivoklát also offers a self-guided tour of the ramparts and the Great Cylindrical Tower. You can choose between a comprehensive tour with several stops and this shorter tour.
Railway history in Lužná u Rakovníka
The Railway Museum in Lužná u Rakovníka has a collection of more than thirty exhibits, including locomotives from various eras of railway operation, steam and diesel locomotives, and historic passenger, freight and specialist cars. An H0-gauge model railway complements the exhibition. The collection may change.
The museum is housed in a former locomotive depot of the Buštěhrad Railway in Lužná–Lišany. It is right next to the railway station; signs lead from there to the museum. The collection also includes an 800 mm narrow-gauge railway with sightseeing rides. These use operational locomotives and a converted passenger car. Timetables may vary; check whether a ride is running on the day of your trip.
