Accommodation in Kolešovice
Kolešovice brings together cultural history, hop growing and trips on the heritage railway. The castle, church and chapel offer different historical points of interest; there is also a puzzle trail, seasonal hop picking and a cycling route. Two practical conditions matter for your stay: the castle interiors are not open to the public, and hop picking is tied to the harvest season.
Castle and Baroque Church
Zámek Kolešovice Castle is a cultural monument. It comprises the old and new castles, an enclosing wall with gates, and the castle park. The monument therefore includes more than just the castle buildings: the wall and park are also named components. The interiors are not open to the public. So do not plan a tour of the castle rooms, and check local information before your visit.
Kostel sv. Petra a Pavla Church stands in the town center next to the castle. The present-day church was built by E. Kondel in 1768–1769. It is a single-nave Baroque building with predominantly Baroque furnishings. The description of its architecture and furnishings complements the dates: the building itself and the interior design each offer a separate indication of the church’s character.
Chapel and Art-Historical Details
Unlike the church in the town center, Kaple sv. Jana Nepomuckého Chapel stands on the outskirts of Kolešovice, at the crossroads of the roads to Heřmanov and Zderazi. Its interior furnishings include a stone statue of Saint John of Nepomuk dating from the mid-18th century. The two religious buildings thus bring different aspects to the fore: the church is defined by its architecture, furnishings and construction dates, while the chapel is notable for its location on the outskirts and its dated statue.
The dates can also be distinguished: 1768–1769 refers to the construction of the present-day church; the chapel’s statue dates from the mid-18th century. When considering the town’s building history, you can thus compare a specific construction date with an approximate date for a work of art.
Hops, Local History and Harvest Season
The “Od unikátní sušárny chmelu ke hrobu kontraadmirála” (“From the Unique Hop Kiln to the Rear Admiral’s Grave”) puzzle trail starts at the historic hop kiln in Kolešovice. Its starting point highlights the trail’s connection with hops. The kiln is a landmark in its own right, alongside the religious buildings and castle ensemble.
A small hop field is another local attraction: it is supported by wooden poles, and during harvest time, on the last Saturday in August, visitors can try picking hops by hand. If this seasonal experience is important to your trip, check the exact date in advance. This lets you plan around the harvest season rather than assume the activity is available year-round.
Trips by Train and Bike
The Kolešovka heritage railway runs along a 17-kilometer route from Lužná u Rakovníka to Kolešovice. Along the way, the line passes through hop-growing communities in the Rakovník region. Kolešovice is the terminus for excursion steam trains on the heritage railway. Check the timetable before traveling so you can plan your trip around the actual train times.
Another option is the Kolešovka cycling route. It has 49 meters of elevation gain and, according to the tourism information, is also suitable for family outings. When choosing between train and bike, you can weigh different factors: for the train, the 17-kilometer distance and the endpoints matter; for the cycling route, consider the elevation gain and its stated suitability for family outings.
Landscape and Hop Growing
The landscape around Kolešovice is not strongly undulating and has a low proportion of forest. Hop growing, cereals and legumes predominate. Hops therefore feature both in local agriculture and at the hop kiln, on the puzzle trail and during seasonal picking. The castle, religious buildings and hop-related attractions offer different perspectives on the town—from architectural history and furnishings to agriculture and trip planning.
