If you are looking for a hotel in Velká Buková, the trails, natural areas and cultural monuments can help guide your trip planning. The Rozhledna Velká Buková lookout tower stands on the edge of the village in Křivoklátsko at an elevation of 445 metres. From here, you can explore different themes for your plans: marked hiking trails, a nature reserve and historical monuments.

Landscape and Protected Nature

Velká Buková lies in the centre of the Křivoklátsko Protected Landscape Area. It is also a biosphere reserve in UNESCO’s global network. The Nezabudické skály Nature Reserve lies on the southern edge of Velká Buková. It covers 22.94 hectares and was established in 1988, primarily to protect reptiles and rocky forest-steppe habitats. Thus, the surrounding natural landscape includes both a larger protected area and specific conservation objectives.

Another natural monument is Jedle u Velké Bukové. The protected tree is estimated to be more than 200 years old. Together with the nature reserve, it illustrates two different aspects of the landscape: the protection of a defined area and that of an individual natural monument.

Hiking Trails and Views

The marked Královská cesta scenic route runs along the eastern edge of the cadastral area of Velká Buková. It follows a contour path along a wooded slope; the route offers views of Křivoklát and Křivoklát Castle. Another option is the red KČT hiking trail, which runs from the Velká Buková lookout tower to Křivoklát over a distance of 3.5 kilometres. A short detour from this trail leads to the Hřebínek viewpoint.

The routes can be distinguished by their respective character: the Královská cesta focuses on its course along the wooded slope and the views, while the red KČT trail connects to Křivoklát and includes a detour to Hřebínek. This lets you choose between a route described for its scenery and a connection with a specifically stated length.

Getting Your Bearings at the Lookout Tower

A local road branches off from Class III road 20113 and leads to the lookout tower. Visitor parking is available there. Before setting off, check whether it is available during the season on your planned visit date. At the foot of the lookout tower, there is a children’s playground with fitness equipment for adults too.

Cultural Monuments in Velká Buková and the Surrounding Area

The statue of Saint Wenceslas in Velká Buková is designated a protected monument. The late Baroque statue depicts the saint in armour and princely robes, holding a flag and a shield in a Rococo cartouche. Its description and features make it a cultural point of interest in its own right, alongside the natural attractions and hiking destinations.

A modernist chapel was built above the statue of Saint John of Nepomuk in 1930 to protect its original and later polychrome paint layers. The chapel containing the statue of Nepomuk also holds a valuable Baroque statue of a saint dating from 1764. Křivoklát Castle, a national cultural monument, is also located near Velká Buková. The red hiking trail connects it to the lookout tower, bringing together a marked trail and a historically significant destination along the route.

Velká Buková offers several distinct points of interest for planning your trip: protected nature, trails with different characteristics, and cultural destinations in the village and its surroundings. Make your choice based on whether you are most interested in the character of the hiking routes, natural monuments, or historical buildings and works of art.
