Karlova Ves in Křivoklátsko

Karlova Ves lies in the wooded central part of the Křivoklátsko Protected Landscape Area. Most of the cadastral area is also located in the central part and in Zone I of the protected area. The location of the settlement and the extent of the cadastral area refer to different spatial levels. In the Křivoklátsko Protected Landscape Area, the forests consist predominantly of deciduous and mixed stands. This means that a protected forest landscape provides the setting for your stay, alongside the history of the village and nature and cultural attractions in the surrounding area.

Týřov Castle and the protected landscape

Týřov Castle was built in the 13th century and fell into ruin in the 16th century. The Týřov National Nature Reserve includes extensive, well-preserved forest stands; the reserve also encompasses the rocky gorge of Týřovické skály. On the way to the castle ruins, follow the Úpořský Stream, also known as Oupořský, cross it, and then climb up to the ruins. Týřov offers a magnificent view of the Berounka River and the surrounding area. As terrain conditions can change with the seasons, take this into account when planning the ascent.

The Týřov National Nature Reserve is open to the public only via a marked hiking trail from Skryje to the Týřov Castle ruins and back. Check the latest information about the protected area before setting out.

Hiking trails in the surrounding area

The 10 km moderately difficult “Okolí Skryj” hiking trail is located nearby. It passes through the Jezírka Nature Reserve, known for its rocky gorge, and leads to the Joachim Barrande Memorial, a museum with paleontological finds. This named hike thus combines a striking rocky landscape with a paleontological destination. To choose between them, you can compare their different features: “Okolí Skryj” is described by its length and difficulty level; the route to the castle ruins follows the stream, crosses it, and then climbs uphill.

Local history and Emilovna Hunting Lodge

Karlova Ves was founded in 1828 as a settlement of lumberjacks and charcoal burners and developed into a major center of charcoal production in Křivoklátsko. A literary connection dates to a later period: the poet Antonín Macek came to Karlova Ves for summer stays from 1919 to 1923. Emilovna Hunting Lodge was built in the 19th century in the cadastral area of Karlova Ves by Prince Emil of Fürstenberg. A replica of three stone cannonballs stands at the crossroads in front of the hunting lodge. The settlement’s founding and the construction of the hunting lodge both date to the 19th century; Macek’s summer stays from 1919 to 1923 belong to the early 20th century. This timeline distinguishes the early history of the village and its buildings from the later literary connection.
