Svojetín: Chapels, Monuments and History
Accommodation in Svojetín
Sacred Architecture and Local History
In Svojetín, sacred architecture, historic statues and a fortified site come together. If you are looking for hotels in Svojetín, these themes can help you explore the town according to your interests. Its historical traces vary: the chapel is notable for its architectural form and furnishings, the Rochus Column for a local tradition, and Tvrziště Dub for its terrain and dimensions. A named cycle route adds a specific connection to other places to this cultural and historical focus.
The Chapel of St John of Nepomuk stands on Svojetín’s village green, opposite farmhouse No. 5. The almost square building, made of stone and brick, is finished with white plaster. Its gabled roof is covered with slate tiles. It is topped by a hexagonal roof turret without a bell, with an onion-shaped dome. A roof turret is a tower-like structure on a roof; here, it is one of the distinctive features of the exterior. The Baroque chapel was built in 1721–1722. Inside are a stone altar and a polychrome statue of the saint with a curved posture.
At the listed Socha Panny Marie s Jezulátkem, only the prismatic sandstone plinth on a square base remains. The statue of the Madonna and Child was stolen; an inscription and the date 1714 appear on the plinth. If restoration work has taken place, check on site whether the remains have since changed.
The Baroque stone column with a statue of St Roch also dates from 1714, is a national cultural monument, and stands beside a road outside the built-up area. Local religious tradition relates that the statue was erected after the village was spared a plague epidemic. The masonry Baroque pillar shrine Boží muka is younger, dating from around 1725. The comparison shows two different chronological references—a specific year for the Rochus Column and an approximate date for Boží muka—as well as two different architectural forms.
Fortified Site, Church and Cycle Route
A fortified site offers another way to explore local history: Tvrziště Dub lies in the “Na Starém zámku” woodland, is rectangular, and measures 100 × 80 metres. The southern and eastern sides have an earthwork; to the north there is also a ditch, while a steep slope provides protection to the west. The measurements give the rectangular layout a precise frame, while the defences vary from side to side. Unlike the religious buildings, the focus here is on the shape, extent and terrain-based defences.
The branch Church of All Saints in Veclov, Svojetín, is also part of the town’s ecclesiastical history. Its parish history is documented from 1351. This year refers to a different historical period than the construction dates of the Baroque chapel or the dates of the statues: it relates to the parish history.
For planning a cycling trip, cycle route 8167 is a specific point of reference. It connects Svojetín, Hořovičky and Klečetné. Check the route’s current course and condition before setting out. As a natural attraction, there is also the oak tree Dub in Svojetín, which was first placed under protection on 15 October 1990.
