Hořovičky combines gently rolling countryside with a local history shaped by hop growing and several protected religious buildings. When planning your trip, it is worth exploring these different aspects of the village: the Church of Sts. Cyril and Methodius (Kostel sv. Cyrila a Metoděje) has a distinctive architectural history, while historic house styles illustrate the connection between settlement patterns and agriculture. The area also has prehistoric finds and a distinctive landscape feature in Šmikousy.

Church and Architectural History

The Church of Sts. Cyril and Methodius (Kostel sv. Cyrila a Metoděje) and the rectory form a unified complex and are a national cultural monument. The complex is classified as historicist neo-Romanesque. The church was built in 1901–1902 as a Protestant church in the pseudo-Romanesque style; today, it is an Orthodox church. Its construction period, original denomination and present-day religious affiliation can thus be distinguished. This sequence connects a clearly defined period of construction with its present-day Orthodox use.

The interior is accessible during services. If you would like to see it from inside, plan your visit around a service.

Hop Growing and Historic Buildings

Hop growing has long shaped the buildings and character of Hořovičky. Large, multi-storey, post-classical brick houses with extensive agricultural areas designed for hop growing predominate among the historic buildings. This building type combines homes with agricultural spaces and makes the connection between cultivation and the village’s appearance clear. Hops are therefore not only part of local history, but also key to understanding the historic architecture. The condition of individual houses may vary.

Archaeological Traces of the Past

Hořovičky also has traces of prehistoric history. Finds include evidence from the Neolithic period, the Únětice culture and the Early La Tène period, as well as a princely grave. These periods span more than a single era. They add a prehistoric dimension to Hořovičky, reaching far back beyond the churches’ architectural history, and give local history a different timescale.

Further Cultural Monuments in Vrbice and Hokov

The Church of the Exaltation of the Holy Cross (Kostel Povýšení sv. Kříže) stands in Vrbice village square. It is a national cultural monument in the Neo-Renaissance style. Hokov has a small chapel with a bell turret, designed as a deep niche within the built-up area; it is also a national cultural monument. By contrast, Vrbice’s village-square church and Hokov’s small niche chapel each offer a different focal point.

A Landscape of Hop Gardens and Wetlands

The landscape around Hořovičky is gently rolling, with a mosaic of forests, fields, meadows and hop gardens. Hops connect the landscape with local history, while the forests, fields and meadows offer a broader view of the surrounding area. Šmikousy provides a distinctive feature: this registered landscape element is a former pond and a valuable wetland. Agricultural land and the wetland thus represent different aspects of the landscape. Jesenicko Nature Park lies south of Hořovičky.
