North Brabant is a Dutch province near the Belgian border. Historic city centers in Breda and ’s-Hertogenbosch, national parks such as De Biesbosch and Van Gogh National Park, and fortified towns such as Heusden and Bergen op Zoom shape this destination. When planning your trip, it is worth deciding first what you want to focus on: nature, longer hikes, amusement parks or culture. The places that interest you most can also help determine where to stay.

Tidal Landscapes and Nature Areas

In De Biesbosch National Park, the tides shape the landscape. The area is ideal for hiking, cycling and canoeing. You can experience nature on foot, by bike or from a canoe. The Brabantse Wal is part of the cross-border De Zoom–Kalmthoutse Heide Border Park. This 6,000-hectare nature area includes heathland, wetlands, shifting sand dunes and forests.

De Maashorst offers a peaceful natural area with forests, heathland, shifting sand dunes, wetlands and old avenues. You can explore it on foot, by bike or on horseback. De Maashorst is accessible by car and public transport; to explore on foot or by bike, you can start at one of the designated trailheads.

In Van Gogh National Park, streams and rivers meet expansive green landscapes, shifting sand, wetlands, farmland and country estates. The Van Gogh walking and cycling routes there pass cultural heritage sites and natural areas. If you want to combine both interests, these routes offer a way to experience the landscape and its cultural connections together.

Hiking on Themed and Long-Distance Trails

The Zuiderwaterlinie hiking trail runs for 290 kilometers between Grave and Bergen op Zoom and is signposted in sections using the junction network. The Zuiderwaterlinie links 11 fortified towns in Brabant with cultural heritage sites and nature areas. The Brabants Kloosterpad follows a different historical theme: this 330-kilometer hiking trail passes monasteries and abbeys in 15 stages. The two routes therefore have different focuses: fortified towns and the combination of cultural heritage and nature on the one hand, monasteries and abbeys on the other.

There is also a specific option for a single hike: the TOP nature trail through De Loonse en Drunense Duinen is 16.4 kilometers long and takes about 4 hours and 5 minutes. North Brabant also has an extensive network of themed walking and cycling routes, including routes about monastic life, stories from the border and myths and legends. Route lengths and signposting may be updated; check the latest route information before planning.

Museums, a Castle and Regional History

In the heart of ’s-Hertogenbosch, Het Noordbrabants Museum showcases the art, history and culture of Brabant. It is the only museum in the southern Netherlands where you can see original works by Van Gogh. Since the collection display may change, it is worth checking the current exhibition before your visit. Kasteel Heeswijk presents almost 1,000 years of history in its halls, corridors, rooms, cellars and towers.

Museum Klok & Peel displays the world’s largest collection of bells and carillons. The Peel’s natural history is also represented by prehistoric fossils and a mammoth skeleton. Oorlogsmuseum Overloon devotes seven exhibitions to the Second World War and the liberation. An interactive D-Day experience features videos and special effects. These cultural attractions offer a clear contrast, ranging from art and Brabant history to castle rooms and natural history, as well as the story of war and liberation.

Amusement Parks and Getting There

Efteling is located in Kaatsheuvel, right next to Tilburg, and offers dozens of attractions, roller coasters and park shows. The offerings may change; if particular attractions are important to your plans, check the park’s latest information. Efteling is accessible via the A59 and A65 and is signposted from the N261. Safaripark Beekse Bergen is in Hilvarenbeek, North Brabant. You can get there by car, bike or public transport. Check the latest travel information before setting out.

When looking for a hotel, it can help to first decide which destinations matter most and how you want to get around. That way, you can choose a location that suits your own itinerary, whether hiking routes, museums or an amusement park are the main focus of your stay.
