The municipality of Woensdrecht lies on the border between Brabant and Zeeland, in the heart of the Brabantse Wal. Here, higher-lying sandy soils give way to lower-lying marine clay polders. This contrast gives the landscape its distinctive character: heathland, forests, bodies of water and polders are just as much a part of a trip as the local museums and historic trails.

Explore the Landscape and Trails

The Grenspark Kalmthoutse Heide has an official entrance at the Volksabdij in Ossendrecht. The entrance is accessible by bicycle, public transport and car; visitors will find a bicycle rack and free parking there. Before travelling, check the latest information, particularly about public transport. In the Grenspark, heathland alternates with pools, dunes, forests, pastures and polders. These habitats provide a home for rare plants and animals.

The short Wandelpad Abdij circular trail starts near the Volksabdij: the route is estimated to take about 30 minutes. It passes through a park forest and a stretch of heathland, as well as several small pools where rare plants and animals can be found. As the park authorities may revise route details, it is a good idea to check the latest information before setting out. The Poortfietslus Woensdrecht offers a different perspective on the ridge. It follows the Brabantse Wal, the steep escarpment between the higher-lying Brabant sandy soils and the lower-lying polders, and runs through forest and heathland above the ridge, past pools.

Kortenhoeff is a nature area of about 100 hectares in the Grenspark between Hoogerheide and Huijbergen, managed by Staatsbosbeheer. Its habitats include wet and dry heathland, shifting sand dunes, two weakly buffered pools and an acidic pool; this mix provides a home for many distinctive species. Many meadow birds nest in the Noordpolder, while its ponds attract dragonflies and amphibians. The 5-kilometre Langs de Brabantse Wal walking route passes information boards about the Noordpolder. There is also a panoramic table and a pair of binoculars available along the way.

The trails also vary in length and subject matter. The approximately 4-kilometre Paadje van Kaatje circular trail passes through Ossendrecht, following the route Marie Adolphine walked every day in her childhood between home and school. It starts at the Adolphinekapel on Adolpineplein. Five comic-style panels depict scenes from the life of Saint Sister Marie Adolphine. The 14-kilometre Kloosterrondwandeling Huijbergen connects Huijbergen and Ossendrecht along the Dutch-Belgian border. It follows forest paths, passes water-rich areas, crosses dunes and takes centuries-old trails; it also traces the footsteps of the former residents of the Wilhelmieten monastery.

Windmills, Museums and Local History

Molen Johanna is a round stone windmill on Bergsestraat in Huijbergen. Built in 1862, it is now regularly operated by volunteer millers. Visitors can get coffee and tea and buy mill products in the building next to the mill. As operating times and visitor facilities may vary, check what is currently available before visiting. Also in Huijbergen, the Wilhelmietenmuseum is located in the gatehouse of the former Wilhelmieten monastery. Its six rooms present the history of the Wilhelmieten order and the Congregation of the Brothers of Huijbergen.

Museum Den Aanwas in Ossendrecht tells the story of Paulina Musters against the historical backdrop of south-western Brabant at the time. From the museum, an audio-guided village walk of about an hour takes visitors through Ossendrecht. As visiting arrangements may change, check in advance what is currently available for the museum and walk.

Oorlogsmuseum Ossendrecht covers the years 1939 to 1945, with a particular focus on the Battle of the Scheldt. Exhibits include uniforms, vehicles, weapons and medical equipment; visitors can also see a railway carriage from that period and a fully furnished bunker. The museum may also offer a Battle Tour. It visits monuments and battlefields around the museum and covers the Battle of Antwerp and the Scheldt. Check in advance whether the tour is available during your visit. The Woensdrecht Battle Memorial honours the Canadian soldiers who fought and died for the liberation of Woensdrecht.

Those interested in aviation history can find relics and memories of aviation history at and around Woensdrecht military airbase at the Wings Over Woensdrecht aviation heritage museum. The museums each have a different focus: from local life and monastery history to the tradition of milling, aviation and the events of the Second World War.
