Alphen-Chaam between nature and history
Accommodation in Alphen-Chaam
Alphen-Chaam combines experiences in nature with insights into regional history. At the ’t Zand recreation area, you can swim, hike and cycle; the Chaamse Bossen and the Chaamse Beek offer further perspectives on the landscape. Museums and monuments add insights into regional settlement, customs and historical finds.
Water, Forest and Landscape
’t Zand is located in the forests of Alphen, on the edge of Gilze. The area includes forest, grassland, heathland and marshes. It can be visited between sunrise and sunset; temporary closures may occur. Activities available there include swimming, hiking and cycling. Check bathing conditions before you travel. The ’t Zand bus stop is 400 metres from the recreation area. As transport services may change, check the connection for your travel date.
The Chaamse Bossen combine old forests with wet grasslands, streams, sand dunes, heathland and marshes. Deer live there, while birds of prey fly above the treetops. Another natural feature can be found in the Ossengoor area: shallow water provides a habitat for waterfowl, dragonflies and damselflies. Flower-rich meadows, hedges and pollarded willows shape the landscape in the Chaamse Beek catchment area. At the Laag Heiveltse Beek, ’t Reservaatje consists of flower-rich grassland, two ponds and a hedge.
Hiking and Cycling
There are three short circular trails in the Chaamse Beek area, created by the municipality in collaboration with various partner organisations. A short circular trail in the Reservaatje partly follows a boardwalk beside a pond. Other hiking options include a barefoot or boot trail and walking routes available from VVV Alphen-Chaam. Trail conditions and distribution points may change; check the details before your outing.
Numerous hiking trails in the Chaamse Bossen wind through forests and village centres and along fields, heathland, sand drifts, marshes and streams. Alphen-Chaam also has hiking and cycling routes of varying lengths, several local recreation areas and picnic spots. Cyclists can follow the Fietsallee, a 45-kilometre route that is mostly car-free and runs alongside and through Brabant’s largest contiguous forest areas. In places, it follows the historic trade route from Breda to Maastricht. There are ten places to eat with terraces along the Fietsallee. As these facilities may change, check the latest information if you plan to stop there.
Museum and Monuments
The Oudheidkundig Streekmuseum Alphen tells the story of the regional landscape, settlement, livelihoods, customs, notable people and special events. Its archaeological collection and finds from the Grootmoederstijd tell the story of Alphen’s history. Local history also includes finds from prehistoric, Roman and Merovingian times.
The municipality of Alphen-Chaam has 28 national monuments, including several historic country estates. South of Alphen, the Grafheuvel is classified as a municipal archaeological monument. In Chaam, the NH Kerk at Dorpsstraat 1 is a national monument. Since late September 2023, the museum has offered an app that can be accessed via a QR code at the museum entrance. If you want to use the app, check in advance whether the digital service is currently available.
Plan Your Stay Around Your Interests
