Geertruidskerk stands on the Markt. Its history dates back to 660; the oldest tuff foundations date from around 1100. Geertruidenberg is a historic fortified town with fortifications, town walls and numerous monuments. The townscape has been protected as a national heritage site since 1970.

History at the museum

Museum De Roos presents the ecclesiastical and secular history of Geertruidenberg. Models illustrate how the town’s fortifications developed. The museum cellar houses archaeological finds and an exhibition about the Zuiderwaterlinie. A new temporary exhibition is on display twice a year; check the current exhibition schedule before your visit.

Toeristisch Informatiepunt TIP Geertruidenberg is the starting point for many guided tours, walking routes and cycling routes, and also houses Museum De Roos. If you plan to get your bearings there, check the opening hours in advance. Every summer, the Bergsche Battery stages a historical spectacle in the municipality of Geertruidenberg. Check the specific event dates before your trip.

Walk through the town and take on longer routes

A three-kilometre walk through Geertruidenberg starts at the VVV office on the Markt and takes about an hour. The 5.4-kilometre “Wandelroute langs water en vestingwerken” follows a junction network and passes the fortifications, the historic Markt and various works of art. A GPX track for this route is available to download.

The Spreekwoordenroute Geertruidenberg combines puzzles with exercise: over four kilometres, you solve tasks, collect clues and crack the code to a safe. At about two hours, it takes a different amount of time from the roughly one-hour, three-kilometre walk; solving puzzles is part of the journey here. Check in advance whether the required booklet is available.

Longer routes are also part of the regional walking offer. The Zuiderwaterlinie Wandelpad is 290 kilometres long and consists of 13 stages. The seventh stage runs from Oosterhout via Geertruidenberg to Raamsdonk and is just over 22 kilometres long. The “Wandelen langs kerken” route covers 10.5 kilometres, passes through Geertruidenberg, Raamsdonk and Raamsdonksveer, and follows the walking junction network. Check the latest route information before setting off.

Water, nature and cycling routes

Geertruidenberg lies on the edge of the Biesbosch, Europe’s largest freshwater tidal area. You can explore the nature reserve by quiet boat or go walking there. With a little luck, you may spot beavers, otters and eagles, among other wildlife; sightings are not guaranteed. Four harbours near the historic centre offer mooring for boats. If you plan to go boating, check the harbour information in advance.

The 20-kilometre Terrassenroute Geertruidenberg cycling route passes through Geertruidenberg, Raamsdonksveer and Raamsdonk. It includes stops at cafés and outdoor terraces. You can also book guided cycling tours with local guides in the municipality. These tours visit scenic spots and historic sites.
