Vught combines an impressive cultural history with landscapes shaped by dry sandy soils and wet lowlands. Memorial sites, historic architecture and paths through heathland and forest give your trip a variety of possible focuses. To plan your visit, you can first decide whether you mainly want to explore cultural sites, spend time outdoors or enjoy an active day.

Memorial Sites and Historic Architecture

The Nationaal Monument Kamp Vught presents the permanent exhibition “Kamp Vught: zeven seizoenen en 32.000 verhalen”. The site also includes reconstructions of watchtowers and a camp barrack. The exhibition and the reconstructed buildings each offer their own perspective on engaging with the history of the site.

In Vught, DePetrus has been transformed from a former church into a cultural centre and lively meeting place. Visitors can experience its historic and contemporary architecture and learn more about the building’s origins. At the Ontmoetingscentrum DePetrus, you can get routes, souvenirs and personalised advice about Vught. This connects the architecture with practical guidance for your time in the area.

Kasteel Maurick also has a long history, dating back to 1257. The castle is set on a 2.2-hectare island on the De Dommel river. This brings both a specific place in the landscape and the castle’s long history into focus. Brasserie Catharina van Maurick serves coffee, a fine lunch and an extensive high tea.

Vught is also part of the Zuiderwaterlinie and the ’s-Hertogenbosch–Heusden defence line. Those interested in historic fortifications can also find a connection to them on the Vughtse Heide: the circular route follows forest paths past three 19th-century lunets and their moats.

Landscapes and Routes

The municipality of Vught lies where high sandy soils meet low-lying river valleys. Accordingly, both dry and wet landscapes are part of its character. The Gement is an open, low-lying area in the northern part of the municipality. Helvoirts Broek features a different type of landscape: this low-lying wetland includes ponds, dikes and forest.

Cycling and walking routes are available in Vught, Helvoirt and Cromvoirt. They pass through forests and heathland, as well as historic sites and country estates. This gives you a variety of themes for a tour, though not every route has the same landscape or cultural focus. On the Vughtse Heide, for example, the circular route centres on the lunets and their moats.

Van Gogh, Village Scenes and Active Days

In Helvoirt, the 15-kilometre Van Gogh National Park walking route starts at Saint Nicholas Church. It runs through the Brabant countryside to places where Vincent van Gogh lived and worked. Helvoirt also has seven official Van Gogh monuments. Examples include the vicarage, the Protestant Church and the grave of his uncle Johannes (Jan). The village therefore offers both a themed walking route and specific sites connected with Van Gogh’s story.

Cromvoirt has a different historic village scene, with a ribbon of historic buildings along St.-Lambertusstraat. For an active day, Bernardus Golf offers a full day of golf through its Day Member option. IJM Klimbos adds another activity, with 15 climbing routes at four different heights and a 20-metre-high observation tower.

Mountain bikes and bicycles are available to rent at IJzeren Man Strandbad. This adds to the options for visitors who like to spend their time being active. The municipality of Vught is easily accessible by car and public transport; check timetables for your specific journey in advance.

The activities mentioned make it easy to plan how much you want to fit into your day: the Van Gogh National Park walking route is 15 kilometres long, the “Vughtse Heide” circular route is a 5-kilometre walk, and Bernardus Golf’s Day Member option is designed for a full day of golf. You can plan your hotel and trip around whichever focus matters most to you during your stay.
