Roosendaal: Discover culture, cycling routes and nature
Accommodation in Roosendaal
Roosendaal can be explored through a range of interests: personal memories and local history, cycling tours and landscapes. The landscape is criss-crossed by streams and canals; the polders begin in the north. The routes and cultural attractions also focus on different themes—from history around the Oude Markt to tours through woodland and heathland.
Culture and history in Roosendaal
The Tongerlohuys preserves personal memories of Roosendaal in the Verhalenbank. The Roosendaalse bierwandeling tells the story of beer brewing, particularly around the Oude Markt. On the tour, you can sample beer at special beer cafés under the guidance of a beer expert. Participating cafés and booking details may change; check the options in advance.
The Brandweermuseum in Wouwse Plantage displays seven historic fire engines and other exhibits used to extinguish fires. A visit can be arranged by appointment through VVV Roosendaal; arrange it before you arrive. The Historische Collectie Korps Commandotroepen presents the history of the commandos during their international deployments.
Historic buildings and routes
At Vesting Kasteel van Wouw, four-metre-high earth ramparts trace the contours of the former castle complex. A modern access bridge takes you onto the former castle grounds, where parts of the old castle have been restored and reinstalled. Its oldest section belongs to the old castle, built between 1250 and 1300. The Lambertuskerk in Wouw is a large late-Gothic church dating from the early 16th century.
If you want to combine culture with a cycling tour, there are various historical themes to explore. The cultural cycling routes in Roosendaal cover peat extraction, the history of smuggling, the Catholic past and the history of the church villages of Wouw. The Vier dorpen fietsroute passes the four church villages of the former municipality of Wouw, as well as historic buildings and areas. In Wouw, the Kees Keijzerroute passes works of art and a number of attractive buildings. At one point along the Route van de Turf is “Blossom,” a sculpture by Ronald Westerhuis.
Cycling tours and activities
Roosendaal offers 30 varied cycling routes and a cycle junction network that lets you plan your own rides. The number of routes may change, so check the current selection before planning. A special cycling attraction is the Roosendaalse WielerExperience: the facility has a paved cycling track, a challenging mountain bike course, a dirt-jump track and a 3,500 m² pump track, described as the largest in Europe. In addition to the themed tours, the area also features dedicated cycling and mountain biking facilities.
Landscape and nature
Natuurpoort Visdonk is a starting point for walking, cycling, mountain biking and horse-riding tours through Landgoed Visdonk. The estate includes historic avenues, old hedgerows, woods, heathland and the Rozenven. The Drevenroute in Visdonk is suitable for pushchairs and wheelchair users. In August 2026, more than 20 walking routes were listed for Roosendaal; as the selection may change, check the current overview before planning.
The woodland of Wouwse Plantage covers about 900 hectares and contains several types of forest. It is an important breeding area for European honey buzzards and black woodpeckers. The watercourse De Zoom also shapes this part of the landscape: it is 13.5 kilometres long and runs at a low elevation, flowing past Wouwse Plantage as the Spillebeek and De Zoom. In the past, De Zoom was used to transport peat to the harbour of Bergen op Zoom. These landscape features add natural habitats and a history of waterway use to the routes.
