Wouwse Plantage: Forest Trails, Nature and History
Accommodation in Wouwse Plantage
Wouwse Plantage combines extensive woodland with plenty of ways to explore on foot or by bike. The Pins Planet Trail, nature and the region’s history also lend different dimensions to a stay. If you’re looking for a hotel in Wouwse Plantage, these themes offer a practical guide: the key is whether you mainly want to hike, plan a cycling route, or focus on nature and cultural heritage.
Hiking Trails and Cycling Route
Natuurpoort Wouwse Plantage is a starting point for walks through the adjoining Landgoed Wouwse Plantage and its woodland. It has a spacious car park with a charging station and an activity area. The walking trails start and end at the Natuurpoort; most can be walked in either direction. This means that on many of these trails you can choose which way to go, while the start and finish remain the same.
The Pins Planet Trail leads from the Natuurpoort through the estate’s forests. Along the way, you pass eleven information panels arranged to scale, covering the planets and other celestial bodies. If you’re interested in combining exercise with astronomy, you can include this planet trail in your plans as a themed walk.
On guided IVN walks on the estate, the route leads through forests, along fields and through the area known as the “Woeste Gedeelte.” Unlike the Pins Planet Trail, the focus here is on the different landscapes, while the planet trail features planets and other celestial bodies at its stops.
For cycling, the Plantageroute kort is a 29-kilometre route that takes in history, heathland and old estates. It offers a longer bike ride with different themes from those of the walking trails. Route conditions can change; check them before setting out.
Forest and Nature
The Wouwse Plantage woodland covers about 900 hectares and contains several types of forest. In the Woeste Gedeelte, hills reach up to about 20 metres above Amsterdam Ordnance Datum. The woodland is also a valuable habitat for birds such as the European honey buzzard and the black woodpecker. These two species are present seasonally.
In the Nieuwe Wereld, partially paved paths also make it easier for people with disabilities to visit the area. This is useful information when planning a visit if you’re considering the Nieuwe Wereld.
History and Buildings
Wouwse Plantage began in 1504, when Jan III van Glymes, Lord of Bergen op Zoom, commissioned the planting of a forest for timber production. The Plantage Centre includes, among other buildings, a castle, a hunting lodge and the forester’s house, Prinshenhof.
The Fire Brigade Museum displays historic fire engines and firefighting equipment. The region therefore brings together different historical themes: the beginnings of forest planting and the history of the fire service. Visitor arrangements may vary; check current visiting options before planning a museum visit.
Putting the Landscape in Context
The woodland can also be viewed in a regional context: the forests of Wouwse Plantage connect to Grenspark Kalmthoutse Heide and Landgoed Zoomland near Bergen op Zoom.
