Discover Deurne: Peel, mills and culture
Accommodation in Deurne
Holten’s Mill in Deurne grinds grain, presses oil and saws wood—three wind-powered tasks in one windmill. There is also the Deurnese Peel, an extensive nature area, St. Willibrordus Church with its architectural history, as well as museums and historic sites. For your trip, consider alternating between nature and culture: you can explore landscapes on signposted routes or spend more time at individual buildings, collections and local history sites.
Nature and trails in the Deurnese Peel
The Deurnese Peel is a nature area in Deurne covering more than 1,400 hectares. In addition to its central section, it includes De Bult to the north and ’t Zinkske and Heitrakse Peel to the south. Together with the Mariapeel in Limburg, it forms a contiguous area of about 2,750 hectares. For clarity, it is worth distinguishing between the figures: more than 1,400 hectares refers to the Deurnese Peel, while around 2,750 hectares refers to the area combined with the Mariapeel.
At the edge of the Deurnese Peel in Deurne, Natuurpoort De Peel offers various signposted routes for exploring the area. De Ossenbeemd has a different focus: the visitor centre is dedicated to the Peelrandbreuk and is also a starting point for cycling and walking routes. A film and an exhibition wall explain the Peelrandbreuk; you can also see soil profiles, characteristic bog iron ore and ceramic pipes. These pipes served as Deurne’s first water supply. This makes it possible to combine route planning with a closer look at the region’s geological features.
Mills, sites and local history
Holten’s Mill combines grain milling, oil pressing and wood sawing in one windmill. Group outings and guided tours can be arranged on request. During group tours, visitors learn about the mill, the oil press and the sawmill—so the visit covers not only the technology but also what you can see and do there.
The Kasteeldomein Haageind comprises two castles with outbuildings, gardens and parks. Groot Kasteel also has an animal park and an English-style park. The estate also includes a watermill: it was restored in 1980 and received a new waterwheel in the weir area in 1994. Along the Helenavaart stand nine monumental so-called Koningshoeves, built between 1908 and 1920. Helenaveen is a protected village landscape and can be considered the oldest example of planned private peat colonisation in the southern Netherlands. The different stages of its development are still clearly visible there.
Church architecture and visiting hours
St. Willibrordus Church in the centre of Deurne is a Gothic cruciform church. Its west tower dates from around 1200, and the choir and transept from around 1460 to 1470; the design of the choir is considered unique in this region. Beneath the high choir is a crypt, which has been open to the public since 2005. The organ also reflects the building’s history: the Smits organ still contains valuable historical Smits elements from 1838.
Outside service times, the church is open daily from 1 May to 1 November, except Mondays, from 14:00 to 16:30. Tours of the tower room and vaults are offered at 14:30 and 15:30 for a small fee. You may be able to enjoy a view of Deurne, provided a church attendant is present. As opening hours may change and the view depends on the attendant being there, check these details before your visit.
Museums, art and literary places
De Wieger is a museum in Dr. Wiegersma’s home. The permanent exhibition includes works by Charley Toorop, Jan Sluijters, Leo Gestel, Theo van Doesburg, Jan Mankes and Else Berg, among others. There are also regularly changing exhibitions, as well as courses and stage events. If you are planning to attend an event, it is worth checking the current programme, as offerings may change.
The Toon Kortooms Park is located where the novelist Toon Kortooms grew up. Its facilities include a barefoot trail of about 1.5 hectares with different surfaces, as well as a sound trail. Along the way, there are observation towers, hammocks, benches, tunnels and huts; check the condition of the facilities before your visit. Another way to explore local history is the Echte-Deurnenaren walk, led by a guide from Toeristisch Deurne. It visits notable historic places associated with Hendrik Wiegersma, Antoon Coolen, Jules de Corte and Toon Kortooms. Availability of the guided walk may change.
