Geldrop-Mierlo: Discover heathland, mills and culture
Accommodation in Geldrop-Mierlo
Geldrop-Mierlo offers a variety of options for nature and culture enthusiasts: from expansive heathland and forest reserves to walking trails, mills, museums and historic buildings. Exploring the area lets you combine outdoor experiences with a glimpse into its textile history and milling heritage.
Heathland, forests and walking trails
Strabrechtse Heide is a natural area of about 1,500 hectares, part of which lies in Geldrop-Mierlo. Visitors have access to most of the heathland; walking, cycling and horse riding are permitted as peaceful ways to enjoy it. Check local conditions before setting out. The area's size and range of permitted activities make it a versatile destination for anyone who enjoys spending time outdoors.
Another natural area is Sang en Goorkens, a nature reserve of about 122 hectares in Mierlo. Several walking trails have been opened there through cooperation between the municipality and nature and water organisations. Het Sang is a destination in its own right: this scientific forest reserve of about 15 hectares includes very old alder carr woodland that dates back to before 1800. In Geldrop, the Dal van de Kleine Dommel offers a walk with views of the water.
The Bosroute also leads through the woods behind Geldrop. This circular route is 2.5 kilometres long and includes a section suitable for wheelchair users; check current trail conditions before your visit. If you prefer a longer cycling trip, you can choose from different themes: the 20-kilometre Fietsroute Kleine IJsvogelvlinder passes waterscapes, parks, meadows and village gardens. Het Mysterie van de Venus van Mierlo is 25 kilometres long and links places associated with the story of the Venus. One route focuses on different landscapes, while the other follows a historical trail; conditions along the latter route may change.
Textile history, art and architecture
The Weverijmuseum Geldrop focuses on the textile history of Geldrop-Mierlo in the 19th and 20th centuries. Visitors can experience it through modern and audiovisual displays. The museum is housed in a former woollen fabric factory, so the building itself offers a connection to the history told inside. For another cultural experience, visit Cultuurcentrum Weeffabriek in Geldrop: it is a theatre, arthouse cinema and music venue, and offers creative courses. Specific programme details may change.
The Heilige Brigidakerk is a Neo-Romanesque Gothic church designed by Carl Weber. It was built around 1890, and its towers are 71 metres high. You can visit the church without booking in advance or arrange a guided tour. Check service times and tour arrangements beforehand. The exhibitions at Kunstzaal Dommeldal in Mierlo offer a different kind of regional culture: works by professional and semi-professional artists, mostly from the region, are shown throughout the year. Exhibition dates may change.
Kasteel Geldrop was built in 1350. Visitors can stroll through its stately corridors and regularly see exhibitions. The grounds also include an English landscape garden, a petting zoo, a sensory garden and the Bloemenhof. Check access arrangements for the individual areas in advance.
The mills also tell different chapters of local history. Standerdmolen Mierlo was built around 1640 as a ban mill, also known as a compulsory mill. It is open for visits almost every Saturday from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m., and a miller explains how it works. As visits depend on the schedule, it is advisable to check the current opening times. At ’t Nupke, grain is still milled in the traditional way into various types of flour, and the mill can be visited free of charge. It is a Rijksmonument; it received its name in 1979 during a major restoration.
More special experiences
One archaeological trace is the Venus van Mierlo, also known as the Danseresje van Geldrop: a human figure engraved in stone, dating to around 13,000 years ago. For a very different kind of visit, try Eindhoven Zoo in Mierlo or Speeltuin de Molenheide. At the zoo, visitors can see animals, watch feedings and learn about animals at shows. The playground in Mierlo offers several pieces of play equipment, a viewpoint linked to the former mill and a ten-metre-high outline of a mill on the Molenberg; check access conditions before your visit.
