Dongen: Tanning History, Mills and Experiences
Accommodation in Dongen
In Dongen, different chapters of local history meet practical experiences and leisure activities. Since 2011, Museum De Looierij has been housed in a Rijksmonument, a protected historic monument built as a tannery in 1890. The Looiroute in the museum offers insights into leather production, or tanning. This connects the history of the building with the craft explored along the route.
Culture, Craft and Architectural History
The Oude Kerk dates back to the mid-14th century and is the only church ruin in Noord-Brabant. The open ruins of the former nave provide a venue for celebrations and events. As its current use may change, check specific event dates before your visit.
Molen Koningin Wilhelmina also tells the story of an earlier use: the round stone windmill with a gallery was built as a grain mill in 1893. Visits are possible when the sails are turning, on Saturdays from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. or by appointment. Check visiting arrangements in advance. Watertoren Dongen dates from 1923 and adds another striking structure to the area’s industrial architectural history.
The program at Cultuurhuis De Cammeleur includes theater, music, courses and exhibitions. The program changes over time; if you have a particular date in mind, check what is currently on offer.
