Discover Dongen: History, Culture and Leisure
Accommodation in Dongen
Dongen offers a range of ways to plan your stay: a church ruin with a history dating back to the mid-14th century, a former tannery building, insights into rural life in prehistoric times, as well as routes and leisure activities. To help you decide, consider what interests you most. You can discover Dongen through its architectural and craft history, the Iron Age, or a route and a specific cultural or leisure activity. This lets you start planning with a theme that suits the purpose of your trip.
Architectural History and Early Ways of Life
The history of the Oude Kerk in Dongen dates back to the mid-14th century. It is the only church ruin in Noord-Brabant. This makes it a point of interest for travellers interested in the history of religious architecture and the distinctive character of a church ruin. The Museum De Looierij also connects Dongen with a traditional craft: it is housed in a Rijksmonument built as a tannery in 1890. Its original use places the craft at the heart of the building’s history. Unlike the Oude Kerk, the focus here is on a working building and its function as a tannery.
The IJzertijdboerderij Dongen offers an insight into rural life in the late prehistoric period, from 800 to 50 BC. Visitors can experience this way of life through sight, sound, taste, smell and touch. The grounds include a herb garden and small fields where prehistoric crops are grown. This brings together a specific historical period, sensory experiences and the cultivation of plants. The IJzertijdboerderij therefore offers a different focus from the church ruin or the museum building: here, the emphasis is on rural life and crops.
Routes and Landscape Stories
The “Tussen Donk en Vaart” cycling route takes visitors to 16 different places in the municipality of Dongen. At around ten locations along the route, 50 × 50 cm information stones with QR codes point to landscape stories and explanatory videos. The route therefore covers both the municipality’s various locations and stories about the landscape.
The signposted Broederpad passes many of Dongen’s sights. To choose between the routes, consider their different focuses: “Tussen Donk en Vaart” highlights the cycling route and information about the landscape, while the Broederpad passes many of the town’s sights. This lets you decide whether you are more interested in landscape stories or Dongen’s sights along the way.
Culture and Leisure
The Podium De Cammeleur hosts theatre performances and concerts, with a programme ranging from bands to cabaret. Individual events change over time. Beer tastings are offered at the Opener brewery in Dongen. The 9-hole Golfcentrum Dongen course is landscaped and blends into the surrounding Brabant countryside; operational details may change. The De Vennen sports and health centre offers recreational swimming in its leisure and outdoor pools. Opening times and admission details may change.
When looking for a hotel in Dongen, you can start with the reason for your trip. If a particular activity or date is central to your stay, check the latest programme or operating information before making plans.
