When looking for a hotel for a stay in Zundert, you can plan around nature, culture or an event date. The municipality offers a range of options: from themed walking routes and country estates to windmills, museums and the annual Corso. You can decide which ones to include based on your own interests.

Walking Routes and Landscapes

Oude Buisse Heide is in the municipality of Zundert, between Achtmaal and Schijf. Trails wind through old forests and along meadows, fields, marshes and farms. The estate’s literary heritage is associated with Henriette Roland Holst: she donated it to Natuurmonumenten in 1945 and wrote most of her poetry collections, biographies and political books there. One of the seven themed walking routes is the Poetry Route, which passes a tea pavilion dating from 1840.

De Moeren offers a different mix of forest, heathland, ponds, meadows and fields. Poppies and cornflowers bloom in the fields in summer. The white Rondelen Route is a 2.7-kilometre walking route. Landgoed Wallsteijn has a viewing pavilion overlooking the estate, avenues and a reflecting pond. Near Zundert, you can also walk through the De Reten nature reserve, which includes grassland, fields and heathland. Heider cattle graze on the grasslands, where stonechats and partridges nest.

Routes for Different Walking Plans

The stated distances provide a useful comparison: the Rondelen Route is 2.7 kilometres long, the Van Gogh Walk is 8 kilometres, and the blue Koepel Route is 11 kilometres. The Van Gogh Walk starts in the centre of Zundert, heads into the surrounding countryside and partly follows unpaved paths. The Koepel Route passes through several country estates, each with its own landscape character. Another option is the self-guided, approximately 8-kilometre Trappist walking route, a node-to-node walk through the area around the former brewery. Details of the Koepel Route may change; check the latest route description in advance.

The De Pannenhoef nature reserve lies between Etten-Leur, Zundert, Rijsbergen and Sprundel. Forest, marshes and flower-rich meadows shape the landscape. The walking route through Pannenhoef starts and ends on Panhoefseweg in Klein-Zundert and also passes places in Rijsbergen. It crosses a boardwalk and passes a viewpoint at the Bijloop. Several information boards in the nature reserve describe the peat extraction carried out there from the 14th to the 17th century.

Windmills, Museums and Living Culture

The Akkermolen in Zundert is a post mill and grain mill built around 1600. It is open to the public on Sundays from 1 to 5 p.m. and by appointment. During a visit, you can see the mill’s wooden machinery and learn how grain enters the mill and is processed into flour. Check opening hours and the visitor programme before your trip.

The Boerendag Museum de Karkooi displays wagons and carts, a recreated old farmhouse, historical household objects, and tools, equipment and agricultural materials from rural life in the past. These include a reconstructed old farmhouse kitchen and an adjoining stable. The museum is open from April to October on the last Sunday of each month from 1 to 5 p.m.; groups can also visit at other times by appointment.

Museum de Weeghreyse devotes its permanent exhibition to the history of Zundert and its five church villages, alongside temporary exhibitions. The Vincent van GoghHuis stands on the site where Vincent van Gogh was born and offers an audio play in which Vincent guides visitors through the house. For nature-related activities, VRC Zundert has an educational nature garden where visitors can walk along bird enclosures. The centre also offers presentations and guided walks.

Corso Zundert also features prominently in the events calendar: the parade takes place every year on the first Sunday in September and is described as the world’s largest dahlia parade. Since December 2021, Corsocultuur has been on UNESCO’s Representative List of the Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity. For a visit with a spiritual focus, the Brabant Monastery Trail’s circular route passes through rural Zundert and into the area around the Abbey of Our Lady of Refuge. The route runs through green fields, long avenues, marshes and forests; the chapel next to the abbey is open to visitors.
