Putte: Hiking, Cycling and Cultural Heritage
Accommodation in Putte
When planning your trip to Putte, hiking, cycling and cultural heritage offer different areas of focus. You can tailor your stay to the activities and topics that interest you most.
Compare Hiking and Cycling Routes
The shorter of the two named hiking routes, Klein rondje Putte, is 3 kilometres long and has a stated duration of 45 minutes. Groot rondje Putte covers 10.5 kilometres, with a stated duration of 2.5 hours. The two routes therefore differ in both distance and the time required. These details can help you plan how much time to set aside for your hike.
The 28-kilometre Stabroek cycling loop starts at the Ravenhof/Moretusbos entrance in Putte. Another option is a partly paved route that starts at the Ravenhof/Moretusbos entrance in Putte/Stabroek. It passes Ravenhof Castle and the old castle garden, as well as avenues lined with imposing trees. In the Grenspark, you can also combine the Kasteel hiking trail with the 2.5-kilometre Gloriëtte hiking trail. Details of the routes mentioned may change; check the current route before setting out.
Moretusbos and Historic Sites
Moretusbos is the northern part of the park grounds of the historic Ravenhof estate and is located on Dutch territory. The 18th-century park grounds include raised avenues, a former star-shaped wood, a warande, a fort surrounded by a moat, and the Geldberg viewpoint. These features give the area a range of historical associations, from the layout of its avenues to the built elements of the estate.
De Gloriette adds a distinctive building to the park. Built in 1768, the tea house stands on an artificial mound and is part of the historic Moretusbos complex. The combination of the tea house, artificial hill and park grounds offers a unique perspective on the history of the site.
The protected I.B.V.A.-Frechie cemetery site includes the old access road from Putseweg and a lime-tree-lined avenue running north to south, leading to the protected tomb monument of the Horowitz family. The entrance gate on Putseweg dates from 1924 and features Expressionist forms. Another point of reference in time is the two-hectare plot acquired by I.B.V.A. in Putte in 1909: the first burials took place there from 1910.
The Jacob Jordaens monument in Putte was erected in 1877. It consists of a bronze bust and a tombstone set into the plinth. The protected tower of the R.K. Dionysiuskerk dates from 1865 and is now a memorial to those killed in the Second World War. Putte’s liberation can also be dated precisely: on 5 October 1944, the first Canadian soldiers of the Essex Scottish Regiment crossed the border from Belgium near Putte; Putte was liberated on 6 October 1944.
Natural Areas and Getting There
The Ossendrechtse Duinen lie near Ossendrecht and Putte and provide a habitat for nightjars, woodlarks, stonechats and tiger beetles. Together with the adjoining Kalmthoutse Heide, they form a recognised quiet area. Both areas are part of the Grenspark Kalmthoutse Heide National Park. In the Dutch part of the Grenspark, Stoppelbergen is one of four challenging mountain-biking loops.
For travel by bus, the Dutch Bravo transport company’s route 106 connects Putte with Bergen op Zoom. Timetables and route details may change, so check the timetable before travelling.
