Rucphen between forest trails and village history
Accommodation in Rucphen
The Rucphense Bossen include dense coniferous forests, extensive sandy areas, deciduous woodland, heathland, and grassland. This varied landscape is a distinctive part of the Rucphen destination. There are also walking trails, mills, and places with religious and local history. Nature experiences and cultural themes sit side by side, without any single outing defining the character of the area.
Walking and discovering the landscape
The Rucphense Bossen are crisscrossed by numerous walking, cycling, and mountain-biking trails, as well as a long horse-riding route. If you want to choose a walk by length, De Geheimen van Zegge offers three routes: 10.5, 4.5, and 3.7 kilometres. Information boards are located at the points of interest. The shortest route is 6.8 kilometres shorter than the longest, giving you a clear comparison when planning.
The Natuurommetje De Achterhoek walking trail is more than 4.8 kilometres long. It passes a heathland, fields, wooded areas, ponds, and pastures, and also runs through woodland. Along the way, it touches parts of the Natuur Netwerk Brabant, including the dry EVZ Posthoorn Noord and the wet EVZ Zwarte Sloot. The De Verdwenen Venen routes offer a different perspective on the history of the landscape: peat posts, centuries-old peat canals, and various peat extraction sites bring the history of peat cutting to life.
The Sint Franciscusroute passes through the five village centres of the Franciscusparochie: Rucphen, Schijf, Sprundel, St. Willebrord, and Zegge. Its signposts feature an image of Saint Francis, and the entire route is signposted. As signs and trail conditions may change, it is advisable to check the latest route information before setting out.
Pilgrimage sites and village history
St. Willebrord is home to several reminders of religious history. The Lourdes grotto was built in 1925, replacing a Lourdes grotto built at another location in 1885. Pilgrims who visited the grotto could walk the Stations of the Cross. The Processiepark by the church has cultural and historical significance as an example of the development of Catholicism and the establishment of new pilgrimage sites in the interwar period.
In Zegge, the Onze Lieve Vrouw van Zegge pilgrimage chapel is a place of peace and reflection that attracts many visitors each year. The De Geheimen van Zegge walk also takes in religious and village landmarks: the church, the rectory, the chapel, and the village park in the rectory garden. In the early 1970s, many scenes for the then-popular television series Merijntje Gijzen were filmed there. The 1880 Café Kerkzicht is also part of the route.
The Heimolen offers another glimpse into architectural history. The present stone mill, with four floors, was built in 1866, when a round stone body replaced the octagonal upper structure. Molen De Hoop in Sprundel is a round windmill of the belt-mill type, built in 1840. Sprundel mill bread, also known as Wiendfleppen, is a culinary link to the local milling tradition: the bread is made with flour from the local mill.
Gardens and leisure activities
Heemtuin Rucphen is a Brabant nature and landscape garden, as well as a special wildflower garden that blooms in every season. De Binnentuin, the green area between Rucphen, Sprundel, and St. Willebrord, offers a different kind of experience: sports and recreation. De Watertuin swimming pool is an important part of De Binnentuin and a modern pool with extensive facilities. Check the current offerings before your visit.
Winter sports are also on offer in Rucphen: SnowWorld Rucphen-Breda provides year-round skiing and snowboarding on indoor slopes, as well as activities in the snow park. As activities and booking conditions may change, it is a good idea to check the operator’s latest information in advance. The options therefore range from trails through forests and peatland to indoor winter sports, with mills, pilgrimage sites, and village history offering further themes to help plan your trip.
