Zegge brings together sacred architectural history and a range of route themes. If you are looking for a hotel in Zegge, you can plan your stay around its buildings, walking routes or cycling routes. The churches can be compared by their construction dates and shared architect, and the walks by their lengths; the cycling routes, meanwhile, offer different connections to Quirinus, cultural heritage and nature.

Churches and architectural history

The O.L. Vrouw van Zegge Chapel is a Rijksmonument, a Dutch national heritage site. Its history dates back to the 15th century; it was built in 1922 in a simple Neo-Gothic style to a design by architect Jacques van Groenendael. The H. Maria Boodschap Church in Zegge was built in 1911, also in the Neo-Gothic style and to a design by the same architect. The 15th century refers to the chapel’s history, not its construction date. Compared with the church, built in 1911, the chapel from 1922 is the more recent building; both share the Neo-Gothic style and the same architect.

Walks by distance

“De Geheimen van Zegge” comprises three walks of 10.5 km, 4.5 km and 3.7 km. The 3.7 km option is the shortest, the 4.5 km route is in between, and the 10.5 km walk is the longest. The two shorter walks differ by 0.8 km; the 10.5 km option is 6 km longer than the middle-distance route. This makes it easy to choose a walk based on your preferred distance. Café Kerkzicht, dating from 1880, is part of all three walks and is therefore a shared point of interest along the routes.

Cycling routes with different points of interest

The 12.5 km Quirinus Route passes through the outskirts of Zegge and Oudenbosch. It leads to the site of a former Quirinus well and to a chapel dedicated to Quirinus. A historic well site and a religious building are therefore its two specific points of connection to Quirinus.

The Sint-Franciscusroute passes through Rucphen, Schijf, Sprundel, St. Willebrord and Zegge. It is fully marked with signposts bearing an image of Saint Francis, and passes religious heritage sites as well as beautiful natural areas. The cycling routes therefore differ in their points of reference: the Quirinus Route has a specific distance and named Quirinus connections, while the Sint-Franciscusroute is defined by its signposting, five towns, cultural heritage and nature. The Quirinus Route is 2 km longer than the longest of the three walks. This numerical comparison puts the stated distances of the cycling and walking routes into perspective, but says nothing about the time needed to walk or cycle them.

Another local point of interest

At Kapelstraat 9, there is a play forest and a football pitch. These are two distinct recreational options at one specific address, complementing the themes of architectural history and routes.
