L’Aquila between history, art and nature
Accommodation in L’Aquila
The archaeological area of San Vittorino spans thirteen centuries of history—from imperial-era domus and early Christian baptisteries to a large Lombard cathedral and the Swabian period. This sequence shapes L’Aquila’s historic character. Churches, art and opportunities to enjoy nature and leisure activities add further dimensions, offering different points of focus when planning a trip.
History in buildings and layers
The churches, too, tell stories of different eras and occasions. The Church of Santa Maria del Suffragio was built after the 1703 earthquake in memory of its victims. The Basilica of San Bernardino was built in the second half of the 15th century to preserve and honour the body of Saint Bernardino, who died in L’Aquila in 1444. Its Renaissance façade was designed by Nicola Filotesio, known as Cola dell’Amatrice, and completed in 1542. Inside, a carved and gilded wooden ceiling spans the nave. It was completed in 1724 and enhanced with three paintings in 1732–1733. The basilica thus brings together a Renaissance façade and interior features added later.
The Sanctuary of the Madonna d’Appari offers a different glimpse of history: it was built between the 13th and 14th centuries, nestled between rocks and the Raiale stream. Nearby are outdoor climbing walls used for free climbing. If you plan to take part, check local conditions beforehand. The archaeological site of San Vittorino, meanwhile, brings together Roman houses and early Christian baptisteries, a large Lombard cathedral and traces of the Swabian period. This long sequence makes it a notable subject for anyone interested in the area’s changing historical layers.
Art, collections and planning your visit
Palazzo Ardinghelli is home to MAXXI L’Aquila, a hub for artistic and cultural production. Its collections of art, architecture and photography are combined with temporary exhibitions, in-depth programmes and educational projects. As exhibitions and programme content change, check the latest information before your visit. The courtyard of Palazzo Ardinghelli serves as a public space for the city.
An account published in December 2025 reports that a significant part of the collections of the National Museum of Abruzzo has returned to its former home, with a modern display. Before visiting, check which temporary arrangements are currently in place. For a different way to experience the cultural programme, the red concert hall at the Auditorium del Parco has seating for around 250 people.
The Perdonanza Celestiniana combines a historical origin with an annual event in August: Pope Celestine V established it in 1294, and visitors can take part on 28 and 29 August. During the Perdonanza, the Holy Door of the Basilica of Santa Maria di Collemaggio is opened every year on the evening of 28 August and closed again 24 hours later, on the evening of 29 August. If you would like to plan your trip around these dates, check the programme details in advance.
Visitors can access the Fountain of the 99 Spouts at any time; nevertheless, check local notices before your visit. The Spanish Fort is currently closed for reconstruction. Visitors can, however, walk around the exterior and view the architecture from outside. As this status may change, check the latest visitor information before planning your visit.
Nature and activities
In the Vetoio Nature Reserve, the Vetoio River forms a small lake where grey herons nest. For a trip focused on the mountains, Gran Sasso is another option: it can be reached from L’Aquila by car or bus. Check transport connections before setting out. L’Aquila also has a bicycle-sharing system, with electric-assist bikes at several strategic locations. Availability and locations may change; check the latest information before making plans.
San Donato Golf offers lessons with certified instructors for both experienced golfers and people who want to take up the sport. If you are planning a lesson, check the current course terms in advance.
