When planning a trip related to Monticchio, three themes may be decisive: the first stage of the Cammino Grande di Celestino, the karst along the Percorso ad Anello delle Doline, and the cultural history surrounding San Nicola. Cinema Teatro Zeta is located in the Monticchio–Bazzano urban area of L’Aquila. If you are looking for a hotel in Monticchio, these highlights can help you choose a place that matches your interests.

Karst and Routes

The first stage of the Cammino Grande di Celestino leads toward Monticchio. If you include this stage in your travel plans, note that seasonal conditions and access regulations may vary; check these details before setting out.

Another connection with nature is the Percorso ad Anello delle Doline: the Dolina di Monticchio is part of this circular route, which offers the opportunity to observe characteristic karst features at close quarters. The two routes therefore have different focuses: the first stage of the Cammino leads toward Monticchio, while the circular route draws attention to the dolina and the karst. When choosing, you can weigh a route-stage connection against a specific nature-focused experience.

Cinema Teatro Zeta

The GRAN TEATRO ZETA – Parco delle Arti in the Monticchio–Bazzano urban area was inaugurated on 15 December 2012. Cinema Zeta was created in 2018 through the expansion and adaptation of the Gran Teatro Zeta. The two dates mark different milestones: the inauguration of the Gran Teatro and the later creation of Cinema Zeta.

The present-day Cinema Teatro Zeta in the Monticchio–Bazzano urban area of L’Aquila is recognized by the Ministry’s DGCOL as a cinema with an arthouse program. Its schedule is therefore also relevant when planning a visit, and may change.

San Nicola: Church and Wooden Statue

The parish church of Monticchio is dedicated to San Nicola di Bari. It has a single-nave layout and a rectangular façade made of dressed stone blocks. A nave is the main space of a church; single-nave means that the church has one nave. The façade of dressed blocks, by contrast, describes the exterior appearance and material.

A wooden statue of San Nicola di Bari is associated with Monticchio. It was kept and venerated in the parish church until 1913; later, it was taken to New York. It measures 186.7 centimeters in height and 43.5 centimeters in width. An art-historical assessment published in 2020 dates the statue to 1350–1375. The dating of the work and the period it was kept in the church refer to different periods: one places the sculpture in an art-historical context, while the other connects it to Monticchio’s local history.

For your cultural itinerary, you can choose between different interests: the church and statue offer insight into architectural and art history, while Cinema Teatro Zeta offers a cinema with a recognized arthouse program. If you want to plan your cinema visit around the program, check the screenings for your travel dates.
